OK, I know this has been asked before, but not for a while and I'm hoping there is something new out there...
Right now I ride without a helmet. Yes, I know I should wear one at all times, but I really hate them and prefer not to. A buddy and I are planning to ride down to Daytona in Feb. for bike week and I will probably need a helmet for the states that require them. I figure if I find one I like I might even wear it around here a little more. I have tried a couple HD half helmets, an HJC and a couple other onesand I hated how they felt, the wind noise was horrible and they all sat too high on my head.
So here is what I need - a half or extended half helmet that is kind of low profile (so I don't look like a mushroom head and it keeps the wind noise down), light weight and one that will sit down on my head - not up high like a damn beanie. Any help would be appreciated and pictures would be great. Thanks, and Happy New Year!!!!
If you want a good very close to head DOT approved beanie type half helmet, and (ive tried them all) Check out the VEGA brand, they are sized a little big, I wear a med. but a small from VEGA fits perfect. They are cheap, less than 60.00 and even cheaper on ebay. They come in reg. solid colors and flamed too. These are by far the best 1/2 helmets Ive found that fit close to your head and look almost like the non-dot ones.
If you wear any sort of helmet with a low screen (or none) you are likely to suffer high noise caused by the helmet. They are not as aerodynamic as your head!
We have to wear helmets here in the UK and I use ear-plugs to counter that noise. The US forestry folk did the earliest research into noise while wearing a helmet on a bike (or skidoo) back in the 1970s and I took their advice to heart then and still abide by it today.
What Gunrunner said....x's 2. I have a Vega 1/2 helmet. I have worn it for 4 years and about 30,000 miles. I wouldn't trade it for anything. I have worn it behind windshields, without windshields, around town, and at 100 plus on the highway. It stays where you put it, it's comfortable, and it actually looks good.
I wore it on a group ride last summer and five people told me that when I order my new one, put them on the order list. And all of those people, men and women, said that because of the way the helmet fit and looked. They all wanted to start wearing helemts but they couldn't stand the mushroom look.
Plus, it's a DOT approved lid. Check out their website www.vegahelmet.com.
