Helmets Pro/Con

I agree with you 100% OldArmy! I'm an RN that has worked in long term acute care and has cared for catastrophic head injury victims (many from bike accidents). The majority of those patients were not wearing a helmet when injured. The magnitude of such a life-altering injury truly must be seen to be appreciated; one patient I remember in particular was only twenty years old when injured, semi-comatose, noncommunicative, contracted into a fetal position, requiring round-the-clock total care. This young man will likely live another fifty years in such an institution at taxpayer expense, at what quality of life? Sad, but true.
Yes, I ride, and YES, I wear a helmet...
If I am ever in such a state, Just finish me off. And there is no guarantee you wouldn't end up like this with a helmet on.

Should be a matter of personal choice of course but the right answer is for those that go without to carry enough insurance so my tax dollars don't have to pay for their long term care. I always wear one!

YOUR HAIR? God i love this place.

YOU try walking around looking like Florence Henderson in the 70s after sweating in a full face helmet all day.
And yes, Its a stupid reason to risk my life/safety. As are MOST of the anti helmet arguments. Which was my point.

[8D]Yeah .......... this has been beaten to death ............. but maybe we can do it for the new riders. What's your opinion (?) ......... the advantages of wearing are obvious (legality aside) but what (if any) are the disadvantages. Thirty years ago I had a head-on with a volkswagen at about 60 mph ..... after a week I realized I was alive to tell the tale. But I'm not a hack for them ........ anyone else avoided St. Peter (or worse) by wearing one? Shades of the gun lobby, eh?

Some observations here.
1 - Anyone notice there isn't a single post of somebody that didn't wear a helmet, got into a bad wreck, and is here to say they are glad they didn't wear one? I wonder why.
2 - Anyone that has ridden without a lid and no windshield can attest that you can't hear jack because of the wind noise. Helmets fix that. How can you enjoy the world when you can't hear anything but rushing air?
3 - I disagree with the "personal choice" argument. It is MY personal choice not to have to pay tax dollars to keep somebody alive that is now a vegetable because of no helmet use. I'd only support "personal choice" if there was a disclaimer that if you wreck, you don't receive any insurance or government assistance to keep you alive. Same goes for seatbelts - which can save OTHER people's lives by keeping the driver behind the fricken steering wheel so they can avoid killing somebody after they wreck.

I keep seeing people talking about they don't want to have to pay higher taxes to pay for someone elses medical care because they didn't wear a helmet. Think about this, the increase in tax is nowhere near as significant as the increase you pay in YOUR motorcycle insurance. When an insured rider goes down and the insurance company pays his medical bills, it is your premium paying for them, and the more that happens, the higher your premium. Of course this is offset somewhat due to the number of FTD's and DRT's that don't wear helmets, so it may actually be cheaper in the long run.

Signing a disclaimer would be great, except for all the lawyers who would then go to town trying to circumvent them.
Thanx for the tip on the Scorpion helmet.
I've ridden for about45 years. Always have wore a helmet, never really thought about not wearin one. Last Jan . 5th an idiot pulled out in front of me. I t-boned him at 60 , never had a chance to hit the brakes. Turned my beautiful Chopper into a paper weight. I sustained major injuries, 4 months rehab , but I'm still here and ridin again. After looking at what was left of my full face helmet I'm lucky to be here. Without it that day , story over. Personally I think it's up to each of us that throw a leg over the saddle to wear one or not. For me , I strapped my full face on this morning.
Laughter is good for you. So I would ask those who wear those little beanie helmets to keep wearing them because I always get a good laugh when I see those guys (you know who you are). Particularly those guys with the bigger heads. I'm smiling right now just picturing them in my head. The best of all is the 300lb. guys riding a sportster or maybe a dyna wearing the beanie helmet. I some times have to pull over when I see those to re-compose my self. Anyway, I saw two guys go down this year. Neither hurt seriously, a few broken bones. Both were wearing half helmets. Both helmets had a good amount of scraping that certainly saved there heads. I wear both half and 3/4 helmets and occasionally a full face depending on the weather and other conditions. I see no benefit of riding without a helmet, at all. Those that do aren't cool or anything else, just stupid. Just my opinion.
