My Zumo 550 that I bought in May just died. It was in my truck and I hadn't used it in a few days and when I went to turn it on, it was dead. Tried everthing to get it to powerup, but no dice. [:@]I checked the zumo forum for info and it looks like this is not uncommon. Looks like I need to call Garmin.
Seems like it is a common thing, I just bought one last week hope it holds out. As long as Garmin stands behind the warranty it should not be too bad just an inconvience.
I'm stunned it died. I've been using Garmin GPS's for years in aviation and never had a single problem. What I've been hearing on the Zumo forums is they have you mail it back andsend you a new one. Hopefully not a "refurbished" one. i.e....someone else's broken unit that they "fixed".
There is a battery/reset procedure that if you search for on Zumo forums may help your unit. I think you just remove the battery and then replace it back in the unit.
Regarding refurbished units, Garmin has stated that the units are totally reworked with mostly new parts and recertified before they send them back out. More than likely the refurb units are tested better than the new units since each of them gets a thorough test whereas the once coming off the assembly lines get a quality control check - ie., 1 out of 100 maybe. Also the refurb units look like brand new, so you aren't getting someone elses banged up unit.
TT, yeah I tried all the tips on the Zumo forums with no luck. You're probably right about the refurbished units. Glad this is winter when I don't need it as much as opposed to being on a long trip far from home with it.

They are good to deal with. I sent mine in FedEx 2 day and still received a return unit back within a week. It had the latest firmware on it and was loaded with the most recent maps.
Sorry to hear yours quit. A friends quit over the holidays while he was on a trip. He sent it back to them and is waiting for them to send the replacement. At least yours died quietly in its sleep.
