While on vacation back in 2001 I left my 2000 RK with my brother. He called one day with some bad news, he'd dropped the bike.

Luckily he was slowing for a stop when he hit a slick spot in the road and laid it over on the left side.

Engine guard and saddle bag guard saved the bike. Only minor scratches on the underside of those, nothing visible when the bike was upright. No other damage anywhere.

When I got my SG I knew the engine guard would remain on, and I recently ordered a set of saddle bag guards from Chicago HD to replace the stock supports that provide absolutely no protection if the bike is laid over.

Leave it on. As someone else already said...some day you'll be glad you did.
