Have a buddy witha UC that had this problem on an 07.... Very intermittant no start everything else lit up.... Turned out to be a loose ground in a very hard place to get to a ground lug Directly under the starter...... Tightened it, itsbeen fine ever since. I would check that first.
I agree with Donnylee, check the ground connections. A voltmeter can be used to check for a voltage drop at all connections. Oh and the stator is behind the compensator inside the primary case exposed to oil all the time!
Good advice thanks, just changed the oil and drenched the stator with oil might have damaged the connection. will also check the battery connection but I was getting power to the radio.
Okay, started to push start the bike, kids pushing, 2nd gear, just bumped the engine then skid to a stop, backing bike up in driveway ( only incline around) and tried the starter one more time, fired up like nothing was wrong. Think maybe the starter was stuck in the exact wrong position, will take to HD for evaluation.
had the exact same thing happen to me. i changed the battery and then about 3 weeks later, same crap. brought it down to my trusty little HD shop, no problems found.
Got it home, 2 days later, wouldn't start. Started tracing it out myself. Found the bolt on the NEG terminal of the starter hanging on by a thread.
I don't know if this is your problem or not but you mentioned drenching the stator in oil, which shouldn't happen since it's inside your primary, but what DOES happen a lot is when you change your oil on the FL's waste oil can go into the stator / regulator plug and intermittenly interrupt the connection. So next time you are down there, pull the plug apart (its under the right side front wire tied to the frame) and clean it out. chances are when you unplug it a load of oil will ooze out.
Exactly what my buddy found I was referencing earlier, only we were 500 Miles from home on the start of a trip...Stopped at a HD in Calwell,Idahothey could not find anything...... Did it again later when stoppedat a hotel....Only this time I had my eye on the starter area and saw it arc..... Ahhhhh Theres your problem...! We had to stand on our heads to get it snugged back down...! I think they had a problem remembering to tighten that ground bolt in 2007.
If I was to place a bet, that is your problem too. His bike would always push start. Sometimes his starter worked, and sometimes it did'nt!
