Default Detachable Hardware

I have an Ultra and have heard the horror stories about converting it to a detachable tour pak. I recently had some work done on the bike and had the dealer do this. My intention all along was to be able to take the tour pak off and put on a detachable passenger back rest. When talking to the dealer they advised that the hardware was different for the tour pack and backrest. I purchased the kit, but I am wondering what hardware from the kithas to be changed out in order to be able to use both the tour pak and backrest.

They both use the front docking point. You need to add the rear one for the backrest. Or at least that's how my RK is.

Actually, it's the front set of detachable hardware that you use for the backrest. The rear set (chrome "hoops") are used for the two-up detachable tour-pak rack. The front set is a royal pain to install, but the rear set just takes about 20 minutes. Here's a picture of both the front and rear detachable mounting brackets:

This is the detachable two-up luggage rack installed on the rear mounting brackets. The tour-pak rack attaches to the same brackets:

And finally, here is the detachable backrest (with optional rack) installed on the front detachable hardware. The rack attaches to the backrest and is different than the two-up luggage rack. You would use the backrest without the attached luggage rack in your application, so the backrest would mount on the forward brackets and the tour-pak rack would mount on the rear brackets. (That sounds pretty confusing...)

Thanks for the fast responses to my post.

Another quick question, In compairing the detachable tour pack set up, which is on there now, to the detachable back rest the docking points look to be the same. However the dealer still says they are differentand require different size bushings.

It looks to me that right now I should be able to remove the tour pak and just put on the backrest without changing any other hardware. Is this correct or not.

Thanks in advance.

Not sure exactly what you're asking Kobra. Take a look at the matrix link that Dawg provided. The backrest uses the forward mounting bushings and the tour-pak rack uses the rearward mounting bushings. You can have them both on at the same time. Although the bushings appear (to me) to be the same size, the distance between them is slightly different. I'm assuming that your application is with the two-up seat rather than the solo seat.

Was wondering what all these horror stories were?
I've got the King Tour Pac and the old style detachable hardware, I've never had any issues.
Then again, I don't use a passenger back rest either. Is that what all the stories are about?

Pastor Johnhas provided some very good shots of his intall.
