RE: New wheels are being orderd to finish my new build...
ORIGINAL: GlideMan
Tell me about it. I start reading old posts from Phil, Guy and Bryan andI drop10K on a motor build
I think the only thing i've left stock is the lighting, the transmission, and the frame.Wonder if the lights will be next?
Thanks Phil, Dalton, Bryan
Hey buddy, we aim to please ! If ya got any money left over I might have another suggestion or two
I had the 18" Newports on my 03 RKC and I actually believe it hurt the handling a bit due to higher unsprung weight. I now have the Renegade Daytonas and stayed with 16" for a couple of reasons, handling being one, but also the load rating as we do take lots of trips loaded for bear. Also, and this has happened on the old bike and new, I needed a tire for the 03, was in BFE out of state and no-one had a 140/18 ME880 for a 100 miles in any direction. Last year on the long trip, needed to replace the rear tire in SC and everyone stocks 16's, I was in and out of a dealer in an hour.
Personal choice. The 18's and 21's look really good, but not for me after the first time I tried them. Didn't know what a diifference they made until I got off the RKC and back onto the Ultra with the 16's. Night and day difference.
RE: New wheels are being orderd to finish my new build...
Great advice Guy, and I do lot's of out of town riding as well and have heard all about the what's in stock scenario for tires, hence one of thereasons Istuck with the customized 16's I have on now (polished and triple chromed 16"). Maybe I should stay the course with what i've got a save a grand or so cause my tires are also new. The rear has 250 miles. Hmmmmmmm?
RE: New wheels are being orderd to finish my new build...
Maybe, a person should get a set of say 18's for most day's and keep the stock wheels and tires for the long trips. I mean if you are going on a week long trip or better, why wear out a set of 18's when you can swap back to the stockers in a few minutes.
Just sayin'.
RE: New wheels are being orderd to finish my new build...
I've got a 16" on the rear of my dresser, but have wanted to go to the 17 or 18" on the front. I figured that now that the Fatboys have 17" front tires/wheels, that would make the tires more available. Haven't checked that out tho. I may just stick with the 16", who knows, in 6 months they'll be all the rage again, just as fast as choppers lost favor and baggers are in! Up here in MI, the roads suck, so I know the 16's will ride better.

Not to mention the bigger sized wheels dont like potholes. Especially those NY ones! Thats why i wont go to a 21. I may stick to 18 on mine.
You know, I forgot to mention the fact that when I went with the 18's front and rear on my 03I wanted to keep the same diameter so not to have to recalibrate the speedo or create any clearance problems so the 140/70-18's are a lower profile, less side wall type of tire and you definitely need to watch the chuchholes or you will be buying a rim. Cant speak to the 17', 21's or 23's, have not run them.

Hadn't really thought of it ,but 16's on the rear would mean you will be able to find a tire for the one that wears out the most often.
I'll definitely be changing more rear tires next summer. Went through one last summer with a fair number of burnoutsbut this summer will be at least 2 or 3 and I am pretty sure of that. Gotta practise the smiley faces on the concrete.

After the circles yes.
I just got my quote back from Renegade of the Newports with rubber. $2849.00 and shipping balancing is still extra. That would be like 3200.00 at my door. Yikes! Think i'll be looking some more cause that's so not gonna happen for 2 freakin wheels. I'm all of a sudden lovin the wheels I have now.
