You tell your wife she needs to go on a diet, that is the best way to not care about your own life expectancy or health. My wife would ride my bike right up my a$$ and spin it around a few times. That is not something you tell a lady, they already know they are over weight and believe me they don't want to be reminded about it either. You tell your wife she needs to go on a diet, that is the best way to not care about your own life expectancy or health. My wife would ride my bike right up my a$$ and spin it around a few times. Well the manual states the max weight for both.
Plus the gross AXLE weight.
You need to add up all your weights plus you and the wife and add that to the unloaded weight of the bike on the rear axle.
That gives you gross axle well at least close as you aren't sitting exactly over the rear axle.
HD and other OEM give you this for a reason.
Mostly safety, very much over the specs and vehicle (car, truck, bike, etc) won't handle right and could lead to an accident.
Plus the parts (axle, bearings, wheels, etc) are designed to withstand only so much static and dynamic forces acting on them. Go over the specs and something is going to wear out sooner or break.

Went cruising last summer, highly overloaded and with wife on back...most notable issue wasthe high center of gravity coming to a stop. Bike doesn't like going slow w/ that much weight. Other than that no real issues. A picture from that trip (bags were heavier than they look...)

Most always, you're going to be over the GVWR when touring two up, unless you're really small people. GF and I each get a saddlebag for clothing/tools. TP has things we need to get to fairly easily, rack bag gets the lightest stuff, like rain suits, fleece jackets, odds and ends needed on the road. Keep the weight down as low on the bike as is possible, and pack lighter things higher on the bike...keeps it from feeling as topheavy, and improves handling. Keep air pressure in tires checked!!! Pump up shocks to 25-30 psi.
