I have 18" bars, and with the bars in line with the forks, the shield fits fine, but is not as comfortable for me. I push them forward, and the shield does not work. Some have cut the shield to make it work, some other buy a shorter shield... I go without the shield. Now, that it is winter, I pull the bars back, to use the shield, but come spring, the shield will come off, and the bars will go back forward...
I had the Chubby Wild 1's 518 on for awhile and changed them out to the 515's 10" apes. The 515's are much more comfortable for those long rides. I'm 5' 10" with the police solo seat which is a great combo for me. As always I had to make a change, the windshield height. Too much buffeting with the stock windshield height. Went with the Clearview tour +2.5" grey tint.
Jarman, is that the flyin' apes or the gangster apes. Those things are off the chain. Really likedem but was worried about the windshield.
They are the 1.5" diameter standard type apes.Really cool thing is that they are big enough to route the brake line inside with the wiring. Wish I had gone with hydraulic clutch too.

I haven't got the hang of adding pics, so here is another try. I no pic shows up I through.
16" is really as high as you can go without having your hands end up back at yourshoulders while using a windshield. 18" apes will require cutouts on the sides of the windshield (any glass shop) to keep them upright. The best way to describe handling using apehangers would be the term "power steering".
Buy the apes you want and adjust them to the windshield. That's what I did. I would like my bars out a little farther but I use my windshield 80% of the time. Well 100% of the time not that I did the HQ Build.
Easiest advice would be to stop using the shield. Lets face it windshields do serve the purpose they were designed for well, but they look horrible on the bike. So I say go clean and get rid of the windshield.
