quick question though. I'm getting my 2008 UC delivered this Thursday...really really anxious too I used to own a Suzuki. Now if my suzuki was on a very slight incline and running, it was known to roll off of it's kickstand, infact, a buddy of mine(which owns a HD) said it can't, so I showed him while I purposely pushed it forward, while maintaining control of course. He said that HD's kickstands lock while in the down position and they can't roll off of the stand. Can anyone add any insight to this for me?
[:@] The jiffy stand latches in place - just ensure it is in the detent before you let of your HD. Had a Yamaha Road Star and it fell once because the kick stand did not have a "latching spot".
Yes, it locks into place by sliding into a type of notch which will allow the bike to inch forward, but will not drop. You can only get the kickstand up when the bike is off the stand. Many bikes have an auto kill switch which prevent you from starting the bike when the kickstand is down. The Harley does not have this feature so you have to make sure the kickstand is up before pulling away.
My old ride( Suzuki VL800)was like that too...would shut off it you put it in gear while stand was down; Also had to hold in the clutch to start it. This is my first Harley though, all this information is excellent knowledge. Thanks!!! This is going to be a really long week to get through till Thursday when I take delivery....
But I will tell you that you don't have to pick up a HD far to unlock the kickstand. And if you unlock it, it doesn't have to roll foward far to casue the bike to fall over. Don't ask me to tell you how I know this.[:'(]
I managed to drop my 08 Ultra on my 04 FXST. Amazingly the only damage was a small scratch in the fairing of the Ultra. Now that I've gotten that out of the way, I'm not going to be worrying anymore when I'm to drop it for the first time or put the first scratch in it!
You'll really love the new bike. I did the same change as you. I was surprised that Harleys could be started with the kickstand don but its great to warm the up before taking off. Good luck with your new bike.
If your in doubt and on a slight downward slope, I shut it off in gear, let it roll a little forward till the engine catches it and then put the kickstand down. Just remember what you did and always check the neutral light.
I never put too much faith in the stand. How do you know when the locking mechanism is going to fail. It's not like it's got a big click or something to let you know it's engaged.
