Not sure about solo trip but either way I'm going. Maybe I'll look into some wide beach bars. I kinda like that look. Does anyone know WHY they have this law???????? I'm surprised no one has tried to rally the troops and challenge the local government on this issue. It would seem with the financial upside to bikers during the rally the local business owners would question some of the local laws??? I'm a law abiding citizen but just wonder about some laws and the purpose of them. My bike is not unsafe for me to handle/ride so why the law???? Maybe it's a body odor thing. Just kidding.
They will hang tickets on you like kids TPing a tree on Halloween. And don't count on any slack because you're in the "family". They are there to make money--why else have the stupid ordinance in the first place? And for that matter, when you back your bike into a curb, make damn sure it's not the teensiest weensiest bit inside the yellow area because you WILL get ticketed and towed if it is.
And if you want to get the "full experience", that means you want to stay at either the Chip or Glencoe. You'll go home with some stories, for sure.
And fyi, make sure you allow a full day for Rushmore/Needles Hwy/Custer Park, and also Wednesday is traditionally the day everybody heads to Wyoming.
I live in Daytona. Here they measure off the seat??? Good campsite is Custer campsite. My wifes dad die while we were there and the owners let me go to their home, use their phone and got my wife home. Hell, they were going to has the mail carrier land at the site then take off with the wife to get her to a major airport. Very nice people... Got my first ink their too. They have a web site and yes, they will take our UPS package their too.
Below shoulder height handlebars is not a Sturgis law, it's the state regulation which is enforced pretty much across the entire state. The Sturgis police will pull you over and ticket you as will most police in the state. When I lived in Iowa I would never ride my bike with apes into SD as I knew I'd get stopped and get a ticket.
I'd suggest checking out this link regarding state regulations:
Nevada and Wyoming have the same law on the book regarding handlebars as SD - don't know if they enforce it.
Sturgis cops are strict but fair - if you're not speeding (when it states 25 mph donât be doing 26 mph or above), driving recklessly or doing something else stupid to draw attention to yourself you'll never be bothered - do something stupid and you'll be saying what a bunch of asses the cops are. Be real careful if youâre having a drink.
I rode to sturgis last year with 18" apes that were over my shoulders, I never got hassled at all. Maybe I squeeked by, but didnt really notice anyone else having problems like that either. But, the law is the law, so I guess I got lucky? I'd do it again despite hearing what everyone else has said.
Hey City,
The law is the same in California too........
I just was reading that. WTF????? What's the deal? Why the law? Anyone?????? maybe I'll go to the beachbars. This fricken sucks. I have had my apes for 2 years and love them. Never a hassel anywhere. I go to Laughlin every year and ride all over So Cal with never a mention from LE. I ride safe and sober. I just want my friggin apes man!!!!!!!!

Well I have 20" apes. I'm sure that's all I'll get all week. Think I'll go to some Wild 1 beach bars W0550. They look great on a RK Custom. They have a pic on thier site. Now I gotta buy new braided lines and bars?!?!?! I guess it's probubly the smartest thing in the long run. So anyone got any other info on Sturgis? Think I want to camp somewhere centrally between all the rides in a campground with decent showers where I can have a few adult beverages with some cool peeps and still get SOME sleep. Granted like I said earlier in my post I want to be able to ship some gear to the campsite.
