Evo80 thanks for that website. Great info. I looked at my own state and I'm in complaince with all the laws. My apes are not 6" above my shoulders so i'm O.k. in Cali. Maybe I'll just give it a shot when I get into South Dakota and pull 'em down a bit?!?!?!?

Might work. Might not.

Do you feel lucky?

For me getting a ticket would suck, it sorta harshes my mellow. Not to mention that the money I spend on the ticket could be better spent on something else.

If it were me I would make damned sure I wouldn't be chatting with any of the local Gendarmes.

But if you don't care and want to take the risk, have at it.

(Better have a couple hundred extra in cash, though, if you're going to chance a ticket... Might get more than just one...)

But it sounds like a cool ride. Have fun.

Well I love the feel and looks of my apes but after going over other western states including states that encompass my ride to Sturgis all but California have the shoulder height requirement. Being that I am a law abiding man I think I will be changing my bars to some Wild 1 W0550 wide beach bars. Kinda bums me out but I rather ride comfortably with peice of mind that I'm not going to be pulled over for something as lame as a handlebar height requirement.

If they measure by height above your shoulders, try this blacked out seat adapter. It may even come in chrome.

Sometime I think I am funnier than I probably really am...

It's a twenty dollar ticket. You have to pay the cop that pulls you over before you can leave. I've actually saw a cop with a carpenters level on a guy's shoulder to the bend on the bars. I didn't believe it. Stay out of Spearfish canyon. My wife got a ticket there and on the way back to Sturgis a cop going the opposite way on I90 came across the median and stopped her again. I had her sitting on her rainsuit to try and boost her up. Be careful riding downtown Sturgis another IDIOT actualy grabed her arm as she was riding by.
Lived in Denver for 23 years went every year. 1990 was the best( 50th) 750 thousand people in a ten day period in a town of normally 5500.

Thats fricken weak man. What a B.S. reason to get some revenuefor the city, county or state. Can ANYONE answer my question as to why there is a handlebar requirement law? Lets see hhmmmm...........M/C can ride in most states w/o a helmet and no restrictions onpassenger age but cant have bars that go above my shoulders. Seems like an outdated law. Maybe some lawmakers got hung up on the freedom expressed with Easyrider. For the record I wear a helmet (it is law in California) but it's just my preference and wouldn't put my children on my bike. Of course they are 5 and 7. I don't think there should be ANY helmet laws. I think if someone is responsible enough to own, maintain and financially pay for a M/C they should have the rights to wear or not wear safety equipment. If I do go down I want to have some protection on my body. Just my .02

I had two inch drag pipes without baffles on my 85 WG and blasted the pipes when I saw the 1st cop and he went right around me and grabbed her. I always tried to play the decoy. He also ticketed the guy who was with us apes also.

Call the Sturgis cop department and ask if you can just lower them. Might save time and money. Also, I'd write the guys name down. Just a thought.

You can find some great web pages on about everything that goes on in Sturgis, there are even live web cams to check out. If its your first time going you will be overwhelmed with all the bikes and people, don't plan on riding through town much cause it takes about an hour to go 3 miles! Also be prepared in case the weather is cool, in 2004 when I went the temp was in the 50's to 60's we didn't even bring warm coats or warmgloves, about got frostbite on the way to mt Rushmore ............. Also there are companys that will truck your bike there and then fly in.... I rode from Washington and although an awesum ride it gets long especially on the way home.. oh ya lots of construction that time of the year ............ Have fun I wish I could go back this year..

SD will get you, we had a pack of twenty bikes and the only one he grabbed was the bike with apes, as far as the CCW permit, most are good in SD, but i was told they will arrest you anyway, ticket you $300.00 and take your gun, hoping you don't come back to fight it, if you do fight it you probably would win, i carried mine the whole time, i just didnt get jerked over by the law..........
