Ignition interlock?
I just wanted to run this by you all here since this is usually the only forum I look at while on this board. We had a meeting of our local riding group here and I noticed one of the guys blowing into an ignition interlock in order to start his motorcycle.
Just a little background information...New Mexico has made it mandatory for all first time DWI offenders to install (for one year) an ignition interlock on any vehicle they're going to 'drive' and that includes motorcycles, I suspect.
So, I did a little research and found most, if not all, interlocks have a 'rolling retest' feature where you have to blow into it at random intervals while the bike is running. My question is this: Would any of you, faced with the prospect of not riding your bike for one year, go ahead and install the interlock? Or, would you blow (no pun intended) it off and ride illegally? My thinking is this:I would considerit EXTREMELY unsafe to grab and blow into a hand-held device while rolling along the highway at ANY speed or trying to find an open spot in traffic to pull over to accomplish it. Personally, I think I would just park the bike for a year and consider it just part of the sentence for getting a DWI, but that is just me. Any other ideas, thoughts, sediments, etc...??

Depends how much riding means to you. If I ever got into that position, and it was an option, I would have the inter lock. The ride is my sanity break from reality. Nothing, outside of my family, means more to me than being able to get away from it all on my bike. Some golf, some fish, I ride. Never went without a street bike since I was 16. Just the thought of not being able to ride for a year is enough, no matter how twisted I get on occasion, to make me get a cab.
So for me...easy. Inter lock. I wouldn't blow it off. Imagine if you did and had an accident? Up here you would get roasted. No license, no insurance. First time with no pink slip is a $3500.00 fine. I'd pull over and blow. We have them here as well. Not so much for bikes due to our 7 months of riding time.

Are you serious......you got anythingfrom that states DMV with the regulations on this device. I have heard of something along those line getting used by mommy and daddy to watch their little deliquients. I never seen/heard of one getting used on a MC.
I would never let them hack into the harnes of my bike.....anyhow here in North Jersey its all about how good your lawyer is....usually they can get you off a MV case if your not a "problem driver".
So....how does this (*very hard to belive) "ignition interlock" connect to the bike so that it prevents it from starting?
If you saw this guy....and you ride with him, or you in the same club.....why the hell didnt you just go over and ask him?
Next......how do you....the operator of the vehicle get notified at these random times so you can blow into it while driving?
and lastly.....if you did get "alearted" (*again hard to belive) why the hell couldnt you just pull over to the side of the road. I live in the most congested state in the union.....New Jersey, and I always have plenty of room to pull oner for a few seconds when I have to blow into my alki alarm.
I dont know.....I think I have to call bull **** on this one boys.....????

Well, whether you think it is BS, or not... I live in NM, and yes, after the first DWI/DUI, it is required to install an interlock device (at your expense)on the vehicle you use... whether that be your bike, or a car... I have a buddy that had one on his truck... it is simple. You blow into it, get the green light, and the vehicle starts. Periodically, while you drive, a buzzer goes off, and you have a certain period of time to blow back into the interlock, or it kills the engine... and, the interlock has the ability to record any time you fail to blow into it, or register as over the limit, and it is recorded into the system. When the system is checked, and you have those occurrences, you are busted... failure to comply with the courts orders... Now, I have seen them on motorcycles, here locally, and it is the same thing for them... May suck, but if you break the law by driving drunk, you have to pay the price. I don't know if it is still the case, but NM use to be number one in DWI/DUI arrests... I think Nevada is number one, now, though...
On to the question at hand... yes, I would have to install an interlock on my bike, and my truck, as I use them both as my mode of transportation... If I didn't, I would have it on my truck, and sell the bike, and buy another one when the year was up... I would hate to think of my bike sitting for a year, with no use (although, my wife would probably take over riding it.... naw, I would rather sell it, LOL)
BTW, dagnabit9, I live in ABQ (Ventana Ranch)... let me know, and we can meet up, for a ride...

I knew a guy that had one put on his Cadillac so he drove his pick up to the bar. I don't think the rolling tests kill the ignition just logs it and when you see your probation officer they download the info. Any amount of alcohol will cause a fail status. Noover the limit. Most times when you are required to have an interlock you are not to drink at all not even at home. Part of probation.

Anyways, not to get off topic but, what does that fish symbolize? I know it means something to do with religion, but not exactly sure exactly what it means... My wife asked me the other day, and I hate to not know all the answers, LOL... thanks...
I don't think I could just not ride for a year, I live in So Cal and we can basically ride all year except in when it ours out, so If it did happen to me and they had those here, If after paying all the fines and lawyers fees I had to put one on to ride I would.
The Bottom Line is and I don't want to sound like a pompous *** here, but I don't drink and drive anymore, it's just to costly

I am being told that in IL. they will not allow you to install an interlock device on a motorcycle. I would love to have one installed as it beat not riding. Does anyone know if this can be done in IL?
Thanks
