Default Road Tech GPS

I've got the fairings pulled on my 05 Ultra so it's a great time to install a GPS. I've read several posts where it looks like a Garmin unit might be the choice of many but they also imply (I think) that they don't adapt to the on board CD/CB/Radio/speakers/headpohnes unit except by plugging into the MP3 jack.

I'm considering the Road Tech that would directly interface with the on board unit/speakers/headpohnes with the belief that directions would supress the music as it does in a car. Anybody know if that works?

Also, the documentation is somewhat vague on the amount of maps data the unit will hold. I'm going on a trip from Park City, UT to Oregon Caves and down the California coast to Santa Barbara. Then over the mountians to San Bernardio, up 395 for a while dropping down to Tonopah, NV then over to Ely, NV, Delta, UT and home (Park City, UT). Anybody know if the Road Tech will hold all of that or do I need to take a laptop to load more info. I would guess Park City to Sturgis and back would be OK.

Any and all comments will be very much appreciated. After all $800 - $900 is alot to spend to without the input from those of you that have been/there done/that.

Thanks for your consideration,

Bob

I would like to know if the audio portion works well. I plan on adding the GPS to my 06 flhtcu. I will go with the Garmin Quest 2 which has the entire US database in it. It uses the same connections as the Harley unit (according to Garmin). The database on the Harley unit (which is a Quest without the entire us and Harley dealers added) is limited. I have a 128 MB card in a Street Pilot and it would be pushing it to get all of your routes you mentioned in it.

The guy I bought my 2005 Ultra from used the Road Tech (Garmin Quest) Harley version . He had the integrated power mount (still on the bike), he told me that he could get the sound from the unit throught the system or he could get the musc/intercom but not both. He kept the GPS unit and I haven't replaced it yet to have any first hand experience. If anybody has made it work I would also be intereseted in how. He wasn't willing to sacrifice music so he used the GPS visually only.

For whatever i's worth...and maybe you've already considered it but the new Harmon Kardon system offers Navigation as a plug in module. You'd be probably spending close to the same amount of money anyway and wouldn't need to be concerned about having to contend with an external unit. Food for thought anyway...

I looked at the new navigation system. It only gives directions and does not have a map. I like the visual map.

tda69: I thought the new (06?) the new Harmon Kardon system would not fit the 05 Ultra. It looks like it only comes with an amber/black lcd screen. But if it does the job form an audion point I could probably get by. I like to keep my eyes on the raod and would probably use the visual stuff mostly when I'm not in motion. However, I want to see what it does present based on Lpye's response

zopi: Are you saying that the HD mounting in the catalog will accept the Quest II? Does the mounting connect to the HD Radio or are there separate connections from the Quest II. If the Quest II has the whole US and fits the mount that may be the best solution. At a quick glance I see the Quest 2 for $549 at http://www.bestpricegps.com/Garmin-Quest-2-P336.aspx.

I'm not pickey; but I do want a clean/good looking installation.

Thank you all for your helpful response.

Bob

I have also been looking at the Quest and Quest2 and now the Road tech Quest.
Quest 2 fro 750 --- buydig.com = $511
Quest retails for 450 buydig.com = #317
Road Tech for 600 chicagoharley.com = $480

the biggest difference is the Quest2 which has ALL the bells - entire north amercias preloaded with memory left over

Quest and Road Tech are what I am looking at...

From what I am reading, about the only difference is the Harley mounting and dealer locators and Harley imprinted on the case... What am I missing for the extra $173 for the Road Tech??

I do Not plan on mounting on the bike... I really do not feel it is safe to have something that I am going to be temped to "look at". This is just my feelings... But having something that can help me on the road is what I am after...

I also have the garmin quest kind of lousy only loads certain amount of maps the quest 2 holds all of the united states the harley version is like the quest ubove also if you want to get sound from the gps in aux mode and have a mp3 you can goto radio shack and get a Y for the aux the mp3 is stereo and the gps is mono so the sound is kind of funky however i found this site and it may do what you want got prompt emails back here is an idea of cost

our singleauxadset with associated harnesses will allow you to listen

mp3 music
the SingleAuxADSet is 88.00
the harness to hook my box to the harley is 25.00
the harness to hook my box to the mp3 player is 25.00
the harness to hook my box to the quest is 25.00
the harness (95299) to hook my box to power is 15.00

this is from Kennedy Technology Group
