Chief Joseph Hiway (IMO), is every bit as good as Beartooth. Both are worth the effort to see though so either way you win. I took the ride last year for the first time coming out of Yellowstone on my home.
The scenery makes you feel small and unimportant; it is too amazing for words. I felt pretty blessed that God could make all of that and still remember to make an idiot like me.
My wife rode our 07 Heritage Classic on the trip, only 4 months earlier she was taking the Riders Edge safety course. It was pretty neat to watch her transition to a full-blown biker on that trip.
Did it in August 1999, but it was foggy, wet, and cold the morning we rode it. Visibility sucked and I've always wanted to go back. This was Charles Kuralt's #1 scenic road in the U.S.
Rode the Beartooth last year and the year before. Tried it in both directions. Last year went up the Chief Joseph from Wyoming over the top during a snow/sleet sorm. One inch of sleet on top. A little slick and pretty cold. Have warm clothes. The year before, it was closed for awhile on certain days for road construction and was escorted over the top...pretty common thing during summer, especially if they have a bad winter. Stayed just outside of Red Lodge last year at the KOA. I wouldn't recommend staying there! It's a dump and expensive for just a tent site. Went there both years after the Sturgis Rally, so be aware there will be a lot of bikers with the same ideas, and room reservations should be considered.
