I've been considering purchasing a rider backrest for my 2006 RK Classic. I don't necessarily want to replace the stock seat. Does anyone have any preference for the two HD rider backrests available? One seems to be more versatile and has a cable with a handle in order to adjust the rest to be comfortable for the rider. I'm kind of thinking that it may be overkill. HD offers a slightly (if you consider $100.00 slight) less expensive model that has no cable and can be adjusted front to back once the bracket is installed.
I also saw that Mustang offers a rider back rest. Any info regarding rider back rests is welcome.
If you are going to get one get the adjustable one, you can "fine tune" your position as needed, expecially on a long ride. I have the adjustable backrest on my 08 UC and love it....have had one on my last 3 bikes and won't ride without one anymore. The dealer installed mine before I took delivery, so I don't know how complicated the installation is.
HAVE THE HD ADJUSTABLE (W/ THE CABLE) ON MY BIKE AND LOVE IT ON LONGER RIDES. THINK IT LOOKS BETTER TOO. PLAIN ONE IS SHAPED FUNNY IMO. DON'T KNOW ABOUT AFTER MARKET ONES...RIDE SAFE
Put the adjustable one on my Ultra, and it is the best money I have spent on the bike so far. Having fractured my back awhile back, the ability to reach down and adjust it on the ride is invaluable. Just like adjusting your lumbar support on a long vehicle ride, being able to move it keeps me comfortable. Spend the extra cash, you won't regret it. And you can order it for 20% off from some of the HD dealers if you go the HD route. Haven't seen or used the aftermarket, but the stitching on mine matches the seat perfectly.
I bought the adj. one for my '05 UC before heading out on a long road trip in the fall. If my wife isn't riding, I pretty much leave it on all the time now.
There is no way I could have done the 5k in 14 days without one, that's for sure.
I did tweak it a bit with some washers to get it to tilt back more. There was no chance of me riding the bike with the backrest in the forward most position and the back most position need to go back more for my taste.
