This isn't really a HD issue. I've had three bikes over the years and they all suffered the same fate after about six months in the S. Texas road environment.

I only wish I had thought totry some 3M film on the lowers when my HD was still new. Too late now. Chrome will come when I get the urge to service my forks.

But this isn't a quality issue with HD, it's environmental. Every make bike I see down here has pitted lowers.

My forks are totaly pitted up. Here in Florida the sand has done a
number on mine. I see some chrome forks in the near future.

Well look on the bright side, at 20,000 miles its fork rebuild. They can be all taken down right and have the polish an re-clear or chrome or even black powder coating. The latter is my present option!

A sandy or salt air environment will cause LOTS of problems with a poor quality finish. If you want the chrome look with outstanding durability I recommend getting your lowers polished to a mirror finish then have them powder coated clear. The powder coat will seal the polished aluminum from oxidation and is very easy to maintain a high gloss.

flharleycop BUG JUICE-- You can never chrome over bug juice, it will always bubble. For $25 or so $ you can buy brand new take-offs from your dealer. You than put on a protective film or chrome them. Do not take the chance of chroming your bug juiced lowers. R&R ing your lowers are somewhat easy. Look up DOGG for a step by step on your bike. Good luck. I just saw that you live in my town. Take a trip out to Al's @ Bikers Inc. as he just got in around 30 or so.

Mine look still good even with the environment I live in. I live near Galveston Bay, but the bike is garage kept. I clean the bike often and wipe down the front after most every ride. I have not noticed any pitting yet. I plan on replacing the front fork tubes with chrome.
