That can't be good. Does it seem like there may be a defect in the way the K&N kit is designed that would allow this to happen??? If so you may want to contact them. Maybe they will take partial or even full responsibility. Worth looking into.
Man, when I first read the title "Bolt in motor" I thought you where looking for a aftermarket motor to bolt in! You really might be now??? Hope you get lucky and have little damage! Let us know the out come..
Exactly what I was thinking Creepshow
As far as the damage, it aint gonna be pretty
but may not be as bad as you think
If nothing dropped in the bottom end and I say "if"
I'd pull everything from the jugs up and do performance build
if the budget allows it. I assume you pulled the other plug as well
To bad about your misfortune.
If the dealer did the installation, it may be covered under dealer warranty.
If you installed, you're probably on your own.
don't know of any techs in your area myself.
At the least, you will may need a complete cylinder kit (cylinder, piston, rings, gaskets).
Most likely a complete head. I would recommend one anyway.
Probably about a grand all total.
I wouldn't recommend using the old parts, nicks, scratches, cracks, gouges etc.
Can almost bet the piston is damaged and gouged. Not good to file down the gouge.
You have to do whole top of piston same amount. This would effectively reduce the
compression. Leaving the gouge will create an unintended turbulence area, which could
affect the spark and flame front, altering the combustion process. The edges of the gouge can actually heat up to a higher temperature than rest of piston and create a preignition condition.
Intake valve is most likelybent (backfiring) and that seat maybe cracked.
Yes things can be cleaned, polished, smoothed down, but there could be hidden damage.
If you do reuse, make sure head and cylinder are magnufluxed or xrayed for hidden cracks.
AZ, sorry to hear about the engine. Good luck to you and I hope the damage isn't too bad. It always sucks when something like that happens, but like everyone else mentioned, perfect time to do a nice top end.
If it were me I'd haul it up to Prescott and have GMR install one of those 117" or 124" builds. They are supposed to be rockin'. Anyway in hidsight I thought from the title of your post I thought you were looking for a bolt in crate motor.
