Default Handle bar clamp Q's

I have orderd 16" apes and all the cabels for my RKC, I plan on doing the install myself. My question is How much of a pain in the a$$ is it to take off the clamp cover with the fork lock thing in it? Is it easy? I have not got a manual for it yet but I will soon.

KB,

Not that hard, just have the manual close by and take your time. I just changed my bars, put in the new poly bushings, and changed the grips a couple of days ago (03 FLHTPI). The manual clearly covers the clamp cover/fork lock. I did not change the cables though, that may add some time/difficulty.

Good luck!

Pop off the little plastic "locked/unlocked" cover piece, take out two phillips head screws. Remove the head light and then with a 5/16 wrench remove the nut from the stud on the center trim piece inside the nacelle. Then remove the nut from the handle bar clamp cover screw again with the 5/16 wrench but this time using a phillips head screw driver on the top.

Here is a tip for reassembly. Take a piece of good sticky tape fold it over sticky side out. Stick it to your index finger then stack the nut and flat washer, holes aligned of course,on to the tape. With all this delicately stuck to your finger reach into the nacelle and align the nut/flat/washer up with the hole in the nacelle. Start the screw from above then you can pull your finger and the tape out and use the wrench/screwdriver to tighten it all up. The lack of space inside the nacelle, above the steering neck makes the tape trick kind of necesary.

Another tip, dont try and take all the adjustment BS and bezel etc apart on the headlight. Take out the 7 screws that hold the lamp bucket into the nacelle. The are stainless screws all the way around the outter rim. Pull the whole thing out and unplug the bulb and set it on a rag on the work bench.

Hope this helps!
