Farns,
We have had the odd meathead stop riders and stick their baton up the pipes to check for baffles and write a ticket. I don't think anyone that has gone to court in the Toronto area has lost yet.
They've been trying this in Alberta as well. Timmie's in Ft. Sask. $179.00 fine. Guys go to court and it gets thrown out. The RCMP-GRC ("Gravel Road Cops") even tell them to fight it as there is no set decibel level listed in the Alberta Highway act.
I guess in a way they win...even if the ticket doesn't stand up. I don't go there because I don't need the hassle. Costs me way more than $179.00 to miss work and sit in court all day to have it thrown out.
I have notice on Hwy. 101 in Oregon that they have signs posted about excessively loud pipes. Never been pulled over for it as I keep an eye out for LEO's. If I see them, I try to stay out of the gas.
I'd like to know how they decide what the limit is and how they test it? Must be weak as the 3 guys, I know, that have gotten them, have had them all thrown out of court before they even get there by letter.
Stay out of Denver Colo. They seem to be the only ones I know of enforcing noise laws. 2" drags on one of my bikes no problem with any LEO'S down here in SC.
Really. How many people do you know who got a pipes ticket in Denver? I live close and more than occasionally ride through Denver. Never had a problem. Don't know anyone who has. I know a retired Denve cop. He says the cops are pissed about the over publicized and clearly unenforcible ordinance for motorcycles only. See, a lot of cops ride Harleys too. It pisses them off too.
You advertise that "Red and White" patch. Did you know he local H.A.'s club house is in old North Denver. Do you think they all changed pipes?
AMA is fighting this issue. Know of one person who fought ticket and won. Told to me by a friends lawyer who defended him ( Wade Eldridge). Right now it's held up because they are fighting it in court. Denver amended the law it states 80 dcb at 25' and any bike 82 or newer must have EPA stamp $500. fine google Denver motorcycle noise limits and see what it says.
Lived in Denver for 23 years know exactly where the Club House is.
Only problem I've had is in a town called Flat Rock. South of Detroit, almost to Monroe. An officer named Murphy goes after every bike he sees. Even if you don't think your bike's that loud, he'll write you up.
If you're in Southern California, I know that Redondo Beach and San Pedro areas have had noise enforcement going on. Saw a member of the local HOG Chapter in the paper receiving a citation.
It seems like these areas really stepped up enforcement last summer, but haven't heard of any ongoing issues as I stay away from those places.
Up here in Sonora (right by Yosemite) we got the word about two years ago to start enforcing loud pipes; but to take a reasonable approach to them (nothing less than 100-decibles).The bosses even bought us a decible meter to use.Like Ganzo and ChooChoo said, only the bad apples being ridiculous get tickets. We have a narrow corridor of buildingsthrough the downtown area that echo like a tunnel. Traffic backs up there andthe courts and a large numberof businesses are in this stretch. We leave everybody alone who is trying to be reasonable, but thefolks who want to rap their pipes over and over again in that part of town orredline their tachs, well, they get written. I think it's a pretty reasonable balance.
Grafton, IL is a very small town right where the IL and MS river meet. It is a really neat little town right between the river and a rock bluff. The great river road runs along that bluff RIGHT on the river between there and Alton. More bikes there on a nice day than any one place for miles and miles.........
The folks at Grafton don't like all the bikes there bogging their town down and interrupting the craft shoppers. The cops patrol very heavy on nice days, but I have never saw anyone pulled over that wasn't speeding or causing excessive noise on purpose. You go there and get crazy, you'll get a ticket. So far I haven't saw anyone pulled over just to be harrassed, but I am only there three or four times a season.
Sportbikes running 150 mph between Alton and Grafton are bringing eyes on us just as much as loud pipes are.
If you are ever in that area, you owe it to yourself to stop at Fast Eddie's Bon aire in Alton. It is right on Broadway. They have a bike only parking lot with concrete barriers to keep cars out. On a good day, it is like being at a custom bike show. The food is great and all but free, usually live entertainment.
