Default Derby cover replacement

Fine people of HDF, I recently ordered some new covers. Just thinking it's been a while since I had a derby cover off. Sounds kinda stupid but, can I replace it while on the side stand? Will I loose primary fluid? What's the best way to go about this?

More than likely you will loose fluid, I lost enough not to feel comfortable; got my bro. to help me set her up to re-fill and install part.
Have plan B ready just in case, too much lean not to loose some.

Creep, What are you doing working on the bike, with all the snow you have down there you won't be able to ride until July anyway!

While you're at it, get rid of the torx bolts and go to ACE hardware and get some chrome allen head bolts and washers. Makes it a whole lot easier next time you change the primary oil. Them torx are know to strip out and are a pain to remove. I don't recommend the stainless bolts since they are a bit brittle and when you break one of them off you are really screwed.

The primary fluid should only be filled up the the lip of the cover, so if you lose fluid, it should not be much. I had the wife sit on the bike while I did mine, just in case. As far as the torx bits go, I didn't have a lick of trouble with them (knock on wood for the next time). Just make sure you use the T-27 bit, not the T-25.. Common mistake, but the cause to a lot of stripped out heads... I also just reused the gasket, which should be fine for yours, as well. No sweat, took me all of five minutes, and that includes the time I had to talk the wife into helping me, LOL...
