I have been scaring myself with all this reading. Have looked at all the sites that claim we need to have a third link (stabilizer) on the engine somewhere to prevent tank slappers and high speed wobble. I noticed on my friends new street glide that he has an adjustable link on the front cylinder, front bolt over to the frame. Can this be adapted to an Ultra Classic ? Would it replace the need for one of these chassis alignment deals.
YouDO NOT need a third stabilizer. The one on your friends is a 2008. Thae link does the same job as yours, however withthe addition of 6 gal. fuel tank and fly by wire servo the link was moved to the front because of space, or lack of. The third link came about when the bagger guys started building higher output engines. The additional torque can cause the isolated chassis to "wander" in corners. '99-earlier models with the 3/4 axle and rear fork could benefit from the third link to prevent wobble above 80 mph. When MOCO added 1" axle and beefed rear fork and mountsending in '03, it moved that wobble to 100 mph. The addition of power only enhanced it. These products were designed to hodl the engine in a lignment with additional power. Can add vibration and stiff feeling chassis to stockers. Some work great, but are not necessity.
The link on the engine of the 08s does NOT prevent the high speed wobble on the rear tire.
At least not the High speed in the curves wobble that may cause someone to loose control of their bike. From what I have read HD denies any such thing occurs, but there are Vids on You Tube that show what happens when you go into a turn with a bit of force and the rear wheel starts to wobble, it isnt a pretty picture. There are a lot more knowledgeable folks on here that can probably explain it better than I, and I am sure one of them will help you out here soon.
There are several products out there that are designed for this specific purpose, Sta-Bil (or something like that) and True Track to name two, I am sure there are others.
If search is working there are threads in this forum for the True Track and others.
