Default Detaching Tourpak form Ultra

Hubby got started with making my tour pak detachable. then he had a whole bunch of questions.....so here I am.

First question: Is there anyone local to me that migt be able to let ussee the setup?Maybe just some Decent pictures?
(We can drop by if it's raining or you can come here...PM me.)

The realquestions...

1. How close to the seat did you clip the wires?
2. What did you do with theComm connection?
3. We are going to put the antenna on each side...anyone else do it? Where did you get the braket?

Back of the bike looks soo bare.....

Lets see if I can be of some help. My tour pack had a connection for the lights so that was easy. I added rear speakers so I got some Deutsch connectors and put them in when I added the speakers. Sorry I don't have A comm system, so I cant help you there but I believe a Deutsch would help you there. As for the antenna I put my radio under the fairing and have no Cb. You could get the mount that Harley sells to mount the antenna down by the rear bracket of the saddle bag mount near the fender sail and put one on each side as the mounting holes are spaced the same distance apart on both sides. You might have to change the diameter of Cb antenna hole, but I'm not to sure about that they may be the same diameter. Hope this helps.

I removed the connectors from the speaker housing and put them under my seat. I used soldered and shrink wrap at both ends. I never use my CB so I coiled the cable and wire tied it under the right side cover. I used a hiding antenna for the AM/FM. I will take pics of the harnesses coming out of the tour pak today and post them for you.

Don't clip the wires close to the seat, clip the wires under the seat. buy a thumbscrew to replace the Philips head screw that holds the seat on and loose the leather strap. Before you remove the TP, you just spin the thumb screw out, lift off the seat, then after unplugging, you can neatly tuck the wires in and they won't be sticking out tangling in the weather.
The speakers have Deutch connectors just inside the pods. You need to pull out the plastic trim ring, where the wire goes into the pod, then the plugs will come out and you can unplug them. I don't use the communication set up, but it's just another wire , so tuck it in under the seat wherever there is room.
It'll take some practice and you won't (shouldn't) do it alone as the Tourpac is hard to handle and you don't want any scratches on that new baby, but it should take about 10 minutes either way once you get the hang of it.
You can make it look a lot nicer if you switch the seat to a more sleaker one. I use a Sundowner, not bad in the looks department and still quite comfortable.

I didn't cut any wires. It only takes a couple of minutes to either stow them under the seat, or plug them all back in, so to me it just didn't seem necessary to cut it up and add plugs.

BR: HD sells a couple of antenna kits, including for the CB. The CB kit is PN 76340-98, and it's intended for us on a Road Glide when CB is added. It should work fine on an Ultra to relocate the CB antenna when the TP is removed. It will mount the CB antenna using a bracket mounted to the saddlebag support/fender at the rear of the bike.

Ditto the AM/FM antenna bracket, PN 76312-98 which uses the left saddlebag support rail for mount the antenna. Both are shown in the '08 P&A catalog, pages 497 and 498.

I haven't done either mod but investigated this subject when considering the addition of CB to my bike and wanted to retain the CB with the TP removed.

Since you alreadyhave the CB antenna and cable, you probably only need the bracket and the CB antenna base/loading coilfrom the kit mentioned in the first paragraph, not the entire kit. I purchased the bracket seperately for under 10 bucks, but abandoned the installation project because of the modifications to the tank console necessary to install an old HD CB rig.

Alternatively, your hubby could start with the detachable TP kit for EG Classics, PN 53303-07, and then add what's needed for the CB.

Good luck.

The thing is, unpluging the antennas and the power plug inside the tourpac, requires the removal of the tour pac liner. This takes a little time. The seat has to come off, but if you relocate the plugs from the power to the tour pac lights and the antennas, it will save some time.
If it's easier and faster, you'll do it more often, if it is more trouble, you'll tend not to.
I'd like to get a chopped tourpac or a leather one like they use on Road King Classic or Custom. Much like the one you had on your Deluxe Rose.
I ride most of the time without the tourpac, but when I'm going away for a few days I'll put it on.
If I had one without wires, for short trips I'd use it often I'm thinkin'. I don't ride on the California Freeways though and no lights on it wouldn't be an issue for me.

I found this site back when I was thinking of making mine detachable. It offers some good insight.

Thanks for the help guys...I think the only thing he is fussing with now is the CB. They gave him a list of parts to get for Radio Shack for the CB...now I can't find it so I guess I'll call over there.

My son shared his cold with me so I'm busy dying at the moment and don't want to shae it with folks.[&:]
