What you say is fairly true, but, the vehicle manufacturer will have certain specs or requirements for a particular part (oil filter) and if you bought one that doesn't meet the proper specifications than it's not their (HD)fault. In this case, if Wix specifically states this filter is designed to work on your sporty and it caused damage then it would be the responsibility of Wix to reimburse for damages.

We went thru this on some engines at work, where Baldwin oil filters were used instead of the OEM Filters. We started loosing lower ends. Upon investigation, the Baldwin filter did not have a check valve and would drain all the oil from it each time the engine was shut down, causing semi-dry start ups.The filters mount vertically with the inlet at the bottom. Long Story short, we were reimbursed some major coin for the repair of these engines.

We have filters blow up frequently in the North on cold starts due to high oil viscosity and the wrong filter. We also had them pump the guts out causing pretty bad problems because the lack of a bypass. On lots of engines, the oil pressure relief valve is after the filter instead before it, again depending on the engine.

oh I will post it in the sporty forum also.
First we are going to be so polite butter won't melt in our mouths.
We first need everything documented on the work order including at determination
statement from the dealer that the filter caused the failure. and to get bike fixed in a reasonable
time frame.
with that we then move to the next process.
It is against federal law to mandate the use of the manufacturers product only
on whatever it is you buy, unless they can convince the FTC that ONLY their product
will function correctly.
Otherwise they have to provide the product (in this case oil filter) free of charge for duration
of the written warranty.

Sorry to hear about this. Did you verify that the dealer contacted HD warranty? They may have just told you it wasn't covered without even trying to get it covered. I agree with the previous poster that said your issue is with the dealer, not HD..... but if the dealer never called HD, you might be able to get a quicker resolution by calling HD yourself and reporting what happened.

If you haven't already, you may want to talk to the the dealer GM or owner. Some times they see the big picture a little better than the service guys. I had a base gasket leak on my 02 Sporty under extended warranty a few years ago. Service was going to charge me to resurface the base of the cylinders. I felt that if they were not even, then it should be covered under the warranty. Service dept. didn't budge. I talked to the dealership G.M. and presto, covered!. Ken

I hate to tell most of you this, but you got it all wrong.
MOCO has nothing to do with warranty issues other than giving the dealer their credits for the job.
It's the dealer that is denying the warranty. I'll even go out on a limb here...the dealer fixes the bike, suckers consumer into paying by telling them it's not covered because you used aftermarket part AND files a warranty claim...DOUBLE BENEFITS for the dealer!

Funny, I broke 5 teeth on my clutch basket pinion gear...the dealer never said "it's your 11:1 compression ratio," nor did he say "your Barnett clutch did this." What he DID say when I told him a Barnett clutch was in it, "I don't know anything about it" regarding the clutch and replaced my basket under warranty.

It's NOT MOCO, people!

Everybody listen up!!!
It is NOT my bike!!
It is my Girl Friends.
No this dealer is not involved in the suit.

BTW: defendants have only 30 days to respond to the suit.
If they don't they lose by default.
They only have five days left to respond.
They will probably just squeak it in sometime next week.

choochoo was this at the same dealer you have a lawsuit against or did you go someplace else.
If it is the same dealer did you realy expect a different outcome.

You didn't finishyour post!
You shorted the quote.
I said the filter DOES have a by pass valve.
The dealer says it doesn't.

Or did I type it wrong. Will have to go back and re-read it I guess

choochoo, I think you need to come to the realization that Harley Davidson hates you. I say sell every single thing you own that has HD on it and get a nice BMW. Maybe switching to the metric side will improve your luck!
