What is the build date on the bike? I'm not sure, but I think that is on the serial # plate.
i talked to the seller -- they had never been told anything about the rear cam bearing. I am not sure of the built date of the bike -- i called them for the vin. Is there anyway you can determine from the vin? Here it is:
okay looks like according to my research about vin numbers, the '1' after FFW indicates "regular introduction", since a '2' would indicate mid-year (january), it looks like this engine is suspect. im sure i can find the fix cheaper than the stealer -- they aren't cheap, but at least it lets me know what im getting into -- worst case scenario. so im thinking i could get this fixed for $500 from most any indy.
I didn't know that.
The other thing you can do if you want more power is to change the cams to gear drives when the party goes in to do the bearings. Then you wil never have to do any maintenance on the cam chain tensioners. There are several cams that will work with stock engines and will still work with mild mods if you do them later.
Approximate Mileage: unknown Subject: Rear Cam Bearings on 1999 and early model Twin Cam 88 and Twin Cam 88B motors.
On December 14, 1999 a running change was made in the design and production of the rear cam bearing in Twin Cam 88 and Twin Cam 88B engines. The change replaced the ball bearing style bearing in the rear cam with tapered roller bearings. The Motor Company is aware of the publicity this change has received and the concern some customers may have with the performance of cam bearings.
In order to ensure our customers' satisfaction, the Motor Company extended a 5 year/50,000 mile warranty on the rear cam bearings to owners of certain 1999 and 2000 vintage Twin Cam 88 and 88B motorcycles. The affected motorcycles have ball bearing style bearings in the rear cam and were manufactured between July 1998 and December 14, 1999. This offer reflects the Motor Company's confidence in the product as well as its willingness to go beyond the normal one-year warranty in order to ensure our customers' satisfaction. Under the terms of this warranty, any failure of the rear cam bearing during the extended warranty period will be covered by the Motor Company at no cost to the customer when the service is provided by an authorized Harley-Davidson dealership.
Any questions about which bikes are affected by this warranty or any questions or problems related to your specific bike can be answered by calling the Harley-Davidson Customer Service Department at 1-414-343-4056.
Thanks -- yeah, i just put the vin into the HD website and it did pop up with the rear cam bearing issue. I will ask him tonight if he has the maintenance records. He said it was services at HD every 2500 miles, so maybe HD already did it and he was not aware of it? Not sure, but i think its pretty obvious that the bike was or is affected. He seems like a meticulous person, so im crossing my fingers that he had it addressed. If not, its a point of negotiation further
