I have to travel for work occasionally and I like to drive at night. It's cool and there is no traffic.
I left the house in Albuquerque at about 3 o'clock one morning heading south to El Paso, TX. As I left the city I was passed by a Sheriff's patrol car from Sandoval County. Sandoval County is one county north of the county we are currently in. He is running 95 to 100 mph. No lights. No Sirens. I speed up and follow him about a quarter to a half a mile back. We cruise along into the next county, Valencia, for about 40 miles. He slows down to about 60 before the 2nd Belen exit. I figure he is going to exit so I slow down to 75 which is the speed limit and pass him. He speeds up and follows me for a mile or so and then pulls me over. He asks for my license, registration and insurance papers. I reply that I would be happy to comply with his request but I would like to see his County Sheriff's commission card. He asked me why I was going so fast. I asked him why he was going so fast. He said he was transporting a prisoner to prison. I stated that the he had passed the prison about 20 miles back in Los Lunas and asked if his superiors were aware that he was transporting prisoners, to a nonexistant prison, at 100 mph, at 3 in the morning. He had no answer for that. He showed me his commission card. It was from Sandoval County. Now my wife is sitting in the passenger seat, shitting a brick, thinking that I am about to get a trip to the Crossbar Motel. I look at his card and ask him what authority does this give you in Valencia County. He says he has all the authority he needs and he is going back to his car to get his ticket book to write me up. He goes back to his car. He gets in, makes a u turn and hauls *** away. Now my wife is laughing her *** off. I wonder how many other times he has pulled this kind stunt. What an arrogant ***-hole. It's ok for him to break the law but not anyone else.

If I get written up for speeding or whatever, by proper cop, in his jurisdiction, I will be polite, accept the ticket and either pay the fine or deal with it in the court system.

Great story. [sm=icon_rofl.gif]

It's not the speeding ticket that bugs me, I'm speeding if I'm caught I should get a ticket. It's the insurance and in more and more cases the lack of insurance or under insured. In my state (South Carolina) we have a new way to get more insurance money called the under insured insurance which runs more than the whole cost of the total insurance the year before. Mine went from $ 400 a year to $ 835 a year because of the under insured motorist fees add to our insurance programs in the state, the state legislation allowed the insurance companies to add this to our yearly cost now. You can opt out but if someone is under insured your insurance company has to pick up the tab or you do to fix your bike or auto. You should have to carry the amount that covers whatever, not be under insured, the least we can carry in SC is 25/50/25.
Thanks SC legislature you work for the insurance company now not the people.
“Insurance†is “Legalized Extortionâ€, IMO.

I know way to many retired insurance agents, that are multi-millionaires. Just regular agents, not big smucks with the company.

But you just try and get your daughter’s 1 day old car fix that was side-swipped by and 18 wheeler that got a ticket from the Highway Patrol and it’s a 2 month long ordeal.

Might be a stupid question, but aren't they supposed to fire up their light bar to warn other drivers they're exceeding the posted speed limit? The thing that pisses me off is when an emergency vehicle fires up on Code 3 and blows through an intersection, a couple of blocks later the lights go off and they just cruise after that (I'm sure they were called off on the radio just after the intersection). Respect them tremendously, but that just don't seem right.

Don't think I would have had the 'nads to brace that officer like Galtjunk did, my luck I would have ended up in the clink after a fun ride with a pissed off LEO!
I can only speak for myself but, yes, sometimes when we're running code we end up getting cancelled or the situation has been contained and no longer requires an urgent response.

I'm always conscious about how that looks to the general public but, liability laws being what they are, I'd rather me and my guysshut things down as soon as they're told than keep running code to a non urgent call.

i think some of the worst drivers for speeding are police officers. i see it everyday, i drive an eighteenwheeler and on the road a lot. i see cops break traffic lawss all the time. why? because they can. i have respect for them but wish they would follow the law also.
There is a lot of truth to this statement. I have respect for the law, when it is justley given and applied to everyone, when everyone is on the same playing field. Officers of the Law have a distinct advantage over the general civilian population to a certian degree or leeway of the law with fellow officers of the law...Perfect example, I know for a fact that it is against the law for a Officer of the Law to flash his badge to get out of something. However, when they get pulled over in there personal vehicle, and the officer comes up and ask for the drivers license, and the person reaches into his wallet to get his/hers license, low and behold there is a badge in plain sight for the officer to see. Oh, he or she is a fellow law enforcement person, oh, that officer cuts that person some slack. (Seen it first hand)

In my minds eye, tickets is just another way to get revenue for the state or county, instead of taxing people.
Like the old saying there is a QUOTA, oh, my bad, They now have a Mission Goal, and there mission is to hand out X-amount of tickets.

Yah can tell I just a little bitter about it. Yeah, I broke the speed limit law, I paid my fine. Why shouldnt law enforcement officers have to obey the same laws we have too? My job took me up to Chicago this past weekend. I was in a State Vehicle with U-Plates. I didnt dare go over the speed limit, kept it at 65mph. I watched state trooper after state trooper go past me doing 80mph to 85, with no lights, no sirens. Just so they could get re-setup in the medium of the road to start running radar again to pull people over.
We took count on how many troopers were out this past Friday up to Chicago, 31 troopers. On the way back from Chicago to Springfield on Monday we counted 19 all pretty much doing the same thing. Mainly around Bloomington, IL.., we counted 12 troopers through McLean County.

I've always noted that Johnny Lawis a lot more interested in talking arms and hogs than letting me off with a warning. Hey, at least we're on the same team!

I think the aggrevation of a speeding ticket is that it comes from someone that does it themselves. Speeding, I.E. 15 - 20 over on the interstateis more of a slight infraction of the law in our perspective and obviously within the capability of most vehicles by the LEOs themselves. With the required annual state inspections of our vehicles, I believe most vehicles are capable of the higher speeds that we tend to travel at. Sure, there will be incidents of the idiots who can't handel their vehicle above 25 in an emergency, but why are we penalizing all for the inattentive few. I like to run at 80+. Seems to be where my scoot handles well. I don't do it in heavy traffic because of the potential of the blind, cell phone user who transitions directly from the on ramp across all three lanes to the fast lane then sits there at the posted speed limit. But in the rural areas, the state troopers need to find something more constructive to do than to hide somewhere with a radar gun.

I myself have had 2 speeding tickets in 20 years of driving. The way I figured it is as many times as I speed which is usually atleast once a day. 2 tickets aren't that bad. I pay hte ticket and move on. I know I speed if I only get caughtonce every 10 years then I am good. I do slow down for School zones andwhether I like doing 15 or 20 or not because of the kids. I will usually pull over into the lane of another that is speeding through the school zone just to slow them down but that is the only time I do that. Any other time if I am in the fast lane and someone is slowing down behind me I get over and let them pass.

A bunch of years ago I was going through an intersection and a State Trouper escorting an ambulance blew through the intersection taking me and another vehicle out. Atthe court hearing my ticket and the other drivers ticket where voided and thetrouper and ambulance drivers were ticketed and reprimanded. Came to find out that regardless of what type of emergency they still have to come to halt before preceding. The only vehicle aloud to blow a stop sign or red light is, believe it or not, the U.S. Mail.

I have a great idea for you guys to pass along to your congressmen. How about this: Why can't they let those of us over 21have a special license that would allow us to drive/ride a certain percentage over the posted speed limit? You would have to pass a safety/rider's course, pay a fee and buy a special tag for your car or bike. That way, you could ride/drive 80-90 and not get hassled by the man. Of course this would not apply in school zones but if you're cruising on the highway, there is no reason, if properly trained, you can't drive as fast as you feel comfortable. It's the morons doing 50 in the fast lane that are dangerous. Usually the guys doing 20-30 mph over the posted limit are the ones that know how to drive.
The fee paid would cover the reduction in ticket revenue and if you got pulled over doing more than you were certified for thenthey could nail you. Good idea or am I just dreaming about the good old days when we were still free men(and women)?
