Don't know how it works in Washington, but I paid off my Heritage before I traded it. HD Finance sent me the title, but they had endorsed it showing that the lein was satisfied. If I wanted I could pay $20 to the Florida DMV to remove their name, but it really wasn't necessary. Only issue I had was when I traded it the dealer called the DMV first and they said there was still a lien on it, so I had them call HD finace and they told them it was paid. If I'd had the title with me even that wouldn't have been an issue.
Went to the local DMV and they indicated that I was better off keeping the lean release with the title for future sale/trade. They indicated that the paper work could be lost at the State processing center. In NY there are local DMVs that send the info on the Albany (State Capitol) for processing and Albany then sends the "clear title".
The state lose paper work........ NAWWWWWW that couldn't happen!!

HD sent the title that was released by them.Had to take the title to DMV and do a title transfer.Cost $15.
Then had to wait about 4 weeks for the new title in my name.
Get it done, don't sweet the 20 bucks. If ya loose the letter it's just another hassel to get there name off befor you sell it down the road. Stuff does get lost some times and replaceing it years later can be a bitch. I took a loan on a new triumph in 1980 from a smaller bank that got bought out later and played hell to get the lean released years later and it will just cost ya more years down the road than it will now.Good luck
Everytime I have had a loan paid off I received the title from the bank with a stamp on it saying lien satisfied, the title is always on my name and the banks name then once is stamped the title is good to sell whenever you want, but then again it has been a long time since I financed something I usually just lend my self the money and I pay my self back no interest...[8D][8D]
