That is a very good question.

The SERT "marries" itself to the first ECM it is used on and then cannot be used an another ECM.

I bought a SERT recently and had my bike dyno tuned with it. I ended up with the SERT and a custom map for my bike for a total cost of $720.

Now, Im not complaining BUT . . . the SERT is simply a plug that allows access to the ECM. It probably costs HD less then $20 to produce. Nothing remains on the bike. Once you're done using the SERT, you take it off but you should always keep it with the bike unless you need emergency service on a road trip. So, the way I see it, when you buy a SERT, you are simply buying the right and means to access the ECM . . . what a racket !

What your REALLY paying for is the THOUSANDS of hours of reaserch and development time that it has taken to give you a product that WORKS EVERYTIME, has MANY more features than the crap that tries to FOOL the ECM, works with all the sensors the motor was designed to run with, and oh did I mention WORKS EVERYTIME.
I get it. I wasn't complaining really. Just stating a fact. I removed a Power Commander and installed a SERT because I realized it was the best choice for my bike and what I will be doing with it in the future which is to ride and ride and ride. I won't be changing the pipes, or building the motor. I'm happy with things the way they are now.

Your right, it works and works well.

Check with your dealer to see if they are running any specials. It doesn't hurt to ask. That's how I got mine... $577 with tax, cables and free dyno tune. I couldn't turn it down!

Thousands of hours of research...LOL. HD has had the ability to tap into the ECM long before the SERT...hence the downloads, Twin Scan, etc.HD has now just provided a product to allow the bikeowner to tap into the ECM and make changes. Formany many yearsthe Power Commander was dominating product on the market. HD just found a way to keep more of your money in the family by providing another product that they can sell and service.

Do you really think those downloads and Race Tuner files just poped out of thin air and nobody had to spend any time designing the maps and tables that make your engine run. The Race Tuner has been around as longas Delphi EFI has been on Harley's. Its not new. Been there since 2001

For many yearsPower Comander WAS the dominating product and now there is something FAR SUPERIOR.

And yes they found a way to keep "more of your money in the family", that is the job of every mfg, they also make a product that works.

If you were the mfg of any particular product would you set idley by while others made a profit off an inferior product to workAROUND your product or would you offer something that was designed to work perfectly WITH yours and be able to make an additional profit?

You guys need to quit thinking that its all a great HD conspiracy and start thinking like a business owner, if you owned it what would you do?????

I never said it was a conspiracy...it was the smart thingHD to do. But the product does have shortfalls like not being able to upload/retrieve the map and is a harder to create a map for.

IMO...the next step for HD should be to create an program to help with tuning like the Tuning Link for the PCIII.

Has the SERT really been available since 2001???...I just don't remember it being an option for tuning back in 2002...maybe it justwasn't aswidely known or advertised.
