Default DTT Install Help

Ok so today I decided I was going to replace my TPS as the DTT was acting up on me and I came to the conclusion that it was an older TPS, it was reating badly in the common riding zone, the 2.5-7.5 range, jumping all over the place. So while I was replacing it I thought I'd do a little Tech install help for anyone looking into this. First I'd like to say thanks to Phil for the help with this, but if you didn't have much experience with these things you might find it a bit difficult to figure out, both the DTT instructions are kinda poor and the service manual doesn't get into it much either.

So what I have put together here is a list of some of the technical things that you have to do that Harley doesn't want you to know about.

First is the location of the idle adjustment set screw. This is required to know where to adjust the IAC

Next is the location of the Throttle Position Sensor or the TPS

One of the brass bushings removed

Removing the other one

Re-Installed TPS with required washers

After setting and dialing in TPS

And lastly 3 very important items you must have

I should clarify one of those pictures. First let me say sorry they are so blurry but I think you get the idea. The last pic is a picture of loctite blue and loctite green, and the palm pilot. I used the palm to set the bike up but you are going to need a computer beside your bike, be it a desktop or a lap top. You do not need the palm but it helps in my opinon. There is supposed to be a way to check tps v on the live software but I couldn't get it to work, so I used the palm.

When you check the TPS voltage, the bike is not running. Just turn the ignition switch on and it will show up that way thru the software on the laptop.

Not sure if you were doing it that way or not.

The 06 and up TPS do not have the brass bushings and is a different design. Much easier to hog out the holes for adjustment. For setting the IAC, most everyone I know that runs the DTT has some issues with the IAC screw moving at one time or another. Take the screw out, go to the hardware and get a nut to fit it (it is an oddball thread, at least on the 06's and up) run the face of the nut on a grinder till it is about half the original thicknes, reinstall the screw, set the TPS and use the nut on the backside of the screw as a jam nut. I have not had mine move in 12k miles. Also, the IAC screw on the newer throttle bodies is a tamperproof torx, meaning it has a pin in the middle so you either have to buy a special torx or bust the pin out. Once I had the screw out, I cut a slot in it so now I can use a flat blade screw driver if I need to adjust.

Once I get the screw set where I needed it, I took some clearcoat and brushed it on the threads........once it dries it will not be able to move.

Well took the bike out tonight for a ride and with the new TPS installed it runs GREAT. No more skipity skip bounce from the TPS jumping from 1.9%-7.5% while in cruise doing 60km on a flat road. Runs flat out great... now to make the clutch work...gonna need a new clutch this summer. I can tell.
