Default Road King Classic Tachometer

For those of you watching with baited breath on my handlebar swapping experience, i have the NAMZ wire extensions... and am STILL waiting on the actual bars and chrome housings and switch covers from Chicago Harley. (They may have great prices and are easy to deal with, but dang that 2 weeks takes FOR EVER.)

So anyway, the problem at hand is... the speedo on a king is totally unusable IMHO. I have to completely take my eyes off the road and what is going on to look down to see how fast I am going when I get to the small towns on the back roads of our great land. When I have a helmet on, it is MUCH WORSE.

So to fix the problem, I have been thinking about getting the tachometer to put up on the handlebars.

What do you guys think? And how hard is it to install? Does it look right on a king classic? Or is there a better solution?

I am taking the bike apart again, so now might be a great time to do it if I actually plan to.

Does anyone else think this way and what did you do to solve it?

Thanks in advance.

IMHO, no tach. Don't need it.

Next thing you know you'll be looking to put a nice timepiece on it...lol

It's your scoot though, so do as you please.

My $.02

Not to hijack my own thread, but I have another thought??? ...(and by the way, I already know that I really shouldn't drink this much caffein and sugar this early in the morning. [8D]It winds me up too much and then I fade away before lunch )

But, what if I did the whole, GPS thing... I think the setup and install would cost about the same. I would get speed displayed up where I could read it. I think most GPS systems give a ton of performance data... AND as an addedbonus, I might actuallydiscover where the heck I'm heading, besides off into the sunset?

Do they sell a center handlebar mount or does it HAVE to go to one side or the other?

Whadda ya think?

Your issue is with the speedo....how's a tach gonna help? I really don't think you'll find it much easier to see than the speedo on the dash.

I thought about getting an add-on tach for mine a while back, and started paying attention to various bikes that had them installed. I didn't see a single RK that looked right with the extra device installed on the bars. Just my own taste, I guess, but the RK needs a clean and mean handlebar area. It's one of the reasons I went with that model as opposed to a bike with a fairing. After having grown up building hot-rods, the thought of not having a tach bothered me for a while, but I got over it and just trust my ears.

Good Post. Thanks. Much appreciated. I think you're right. But I know myself. I love blinky lights and I will rev the motor just to watch the little dial jump back and forth.

Can you post a pic of this actually on a bike? The pic on the HD web site doesn't do it justice? Did you install it yourself? The service manual says it's pretty easy and you can get one from online dealers...

I've seen these installed and they look pretty decent. Thy're real pricey though, just to add a needle to tell you what your ears already know.

it's not that bad ,you really just glance at it when shifting and when setting up pc or tuning device it comes in handy.
they now offer them in different colors.if you want to keep your true milage you have to get dealer to set it for you

Default 2003 FLHRCI with tach...

Yes indeedy, it does stick up and ruin the "clean look" a bit, but I LOVE MY TACH! I put one on my '03 FXD, then my '02 FLHRCI, and now the '03 FLHRCI. Gotta have that tach!
