That's not why I need the info Jim, and I hope that's not where this thread ends up. We will probably never know if it was the cause or not. I have met Hammer and consider all BFMC friends. I don't care why he died, I just care that he is no longer in the wind.
It does seem that there may be a problem with the FBW system though. For safety sake, everyone with it should have it checked out...... as long as HD knows what to check for I guess.
TBW can be electronically 'reprogrammed' to the OEM default settings by performing the reprogramming sequence as outlined in the '08 Touring Service Manual on page 4-17 under "Installation of a new Twist Grip Sensor". H-D Customer Service is now recommending that instead of the published '3 second' interval instead use a 10 second interval.
My '08 Road Glide was increasing the idle from a normal 950/1000 rpm to about 2000 rpm over a few on/off cycles. The above 'reprogramming' cured the problem each time it occurred. Now with about 3k miles on the bike, it does not seem to be reoccurring.
uweldit: No. I noticed that my basic idle speed was increasing by about 100 rpm almost everytime I went thru a on/off cycle with my '08 Road Glide. I never experienced any racing or surging while riding. I complained to my Dealer and they referred me to H-D Customer Service. The Rep told me that they were working on a computer 'flash' to reset the on-board computer to stop this situation. While waiting for this new computer 'flash' to be prepared, I was to follow the reprograming technique in the manual (page 4-17) except the four second interval was to be changed to a ten second interval. Since, each and every time my '08 started the fast idle situation, the reprograming worked. To my knowledge, the H-D new programing fix is not out to the Dealers.
I now am approaching 3k miles and the problem seems to be resolved. I went thru about 10 or 11 on/off cycles today and the idle remained exactly where it should all day. .............. BC
0 problem on my 09 UC with 3,000 miles. Just did Daytona and area and was on the bike most of the time..Sounds like a scarry problem. Hope I never see this one.
Very sorry to hear of the loss of your friend and will keep him and his wife in our prayers. We have a 08 FLHT 6500 miles no problems so far will keep an eye on it though.
