Purchased my bike Oct 07. With 3 yr extended dealer said it was good until Oct 2012. Thats a full 5 years from the date of purchase.
Thats a fact, if you get a 5 year extended then you have a full 7 years. Maybe I should roll up my pants legs with all the BS being passed in here.
So, based on your non-BS information, if you buy the "7 year" extended warranty, you get 2 + 7 = 9 years. Didn't know you could get a 9 year warranty. Thanks! I've been enlightened.
For thoses that gotan extended warranty I apologize for the BS statement. All I can really vouch for is what we get in my area.
I have one but would probably not do it again. I am still deciding whether to cancel it or not. Like you found out it runs with your current warranty. My five year is really only three. It seems more often than not you will get the "thats not a warranty item" answer anyway[:@]
Maybe there is some confusion. The exteneded warranty I looked at was called an ESP. Extended service plan, if you buy an additional 5 years you get a full seven years. Maybe its called a "7" year plan, but you pay for the additional 5 years. You have already paid for the other 2 years in the price of your bike.
Protect your bike, protect yourself. The best motorcycle deserves the best protection. That's why you should choose the only factory-endorsed warranty plan available - Harley-Davidson Extended Service Plan - to protect your new or used Harley.
Harley-Davidson's Extended Service Plan (ESP) covers your bike for up to six additional years beyond the one-year factory warranty on new motorcycles, and covers used HarleyÂŽ bikes for up to three years. And the best part is that repair costs are "locked in". All you'll ever pay is the $50 deductible for covered repairs per visit, not per repair. Now that's a good deal!
Bike repairs can be expensive...
Harley-Davidson's Extended Service Plan also give you something that's even more valuable than your bike - peace of mind. The plan is fully transferrable at no charge, protects your bike's value, and includes reimbursement for pick-up, car rental, travel and lodging in the event of a breakdown resulting in a coverd repair. Just fix your bike at an authorize Harley-DavidsonÂŽ dealer, and you're covered.**
So don't take a chance with on of your most valued possessions. In fact, we'll make it easy for you be including your ESP in your Harley-DavidsonÂŽ Credit Loan. that way you only pay pennies a day, but are protected by a plan that's priceless.
I was thinking of purchasing an ADDITIONAL 3 years, maybe the wording is the difference here. With that I would have a full 5 years, 3 beyond the 2 years you already have. Ride safe, fixing to take the wife down to Wilmington, enjoy the beach a bit, then cruise bak. 80 degress here in NC today.
I got the full 7 yr with tire for $1800 and change... it was the first Bike I purchased from my Local Dealer. I did it for two reasons, 1. thought I should start a relationship with the local dealer as the not so local one had better prices, but crappy service. and 2. it was not all that expensive for what you "could" get if something goes wrong on a trip far from home!!! Between the 100 from HOG for towing, and the 200 from HD, that gives $300 for towing... the tire coverage... yadda yadda...
10% of the value of a bike seams like a lot of money for a warranty. For those who can't/won't fix their own bikes and put 20,000 miles a year on it is probably a good idea. I canceled mine.
Since my last Harley was a '74 74 of the AMF line I can say with great authority that H-D's don't run well with Bowling Machine Parts (AMF). I waited for years for HD to make a decent machine and they certainly have come around. When they finally announced that they were coming out with the 105 year Anniversary FLHTCU with the civilian version of the ABS and all the other goodies I wanted I heard my name being called. Even though the bike is much better all around than anything they have built I figured I wanted it built my way (with the options being fully covered). I included a full 7 year extended warranty with full tire coverage because I know first hand that the electronics alone can be a wallet breaker if its out of warranty. I plan some long trips over the next few years and I figure the tire coverage and the towing and the rental car reimbursement and the hotel reimbursement is well worth the peace of mind even if I don't use it. I picked it up the day after Thanksgiving and I have well over 2 grand on the clock with nary a burp from this beauty. I plan on riding the heck out of this bike aver the next few years and the unlimited mileage portion of the program will be getting stretched.
My understanding, and this might vary from dealer to dealer, is that you can add the extended warranty any time in the first two years. So, you might want to wait and see if there are problems in the first two years and make a decision at that time.

You are correct you can purchase the extended warranty anytime while you still have the factory warranty. But keep in mind some dealers charge a admin fee of around $100-200 if the ESP is not boughtwithin the first 3 monthsof the bike purchase.
