I DID NOT BUY ONE WHEN I BOUGHT MY HONDA AND I NEVER NEEDED IT, BUT I DID BUY ONE FOR MY HARLEY $550.00 FOR THREE ADDITIONAL YEARS. IS NOT THAT BAD. I'VE GOT 12,000 MILES ON MY 06 RG AND HAVE NOT NEEDED IT YET.

Default RE: Extended Warranty

I Had the entire cam chest replaced at 40,000 miles on my 2003 Ultra. It was just coming up on 3 years also a motor mount and a regulator. It was all coverd by my extended warranty... I actually sold the bike as my3 year warranty was running out. Buying an extended warranty later is for a used bike is very expensive.

I purchased it on my 2006 Ultra. The dealer happened to be having a special 50% off of extended warranty and Pre Paid Maintenance. That came out to $1000 for 7 years of warrantyand $750 for the PPM... I have had the CB replaced and the HK Radio (two different problems) and the front motor mount. I now have 40,000 miles on this bike and plan on keeping it another two years so by then maybe 80,000 miles. I think its a must..

Mack is right... Your only getting a extra year with a 3 year extended...They run concurrent. Shop around I know they can deal... The PPM I can do my own work but at $750 for 3 years I could not pass it up. I added up all the service work they have performed on my bike which includes2500 mile oil changes came out to $5546......$750 well spent...

I think if you have a few years left on your warranty when you go to sell, it will help.

The downside of the warranty... The dealer or at least mine does not recognize aPOTENTIAL problem as a warranty problem.. You hear a little noise or anything that is not a failure, they are not going to go in there and fix it till it falls out on the floor... I guess I can see there point but it still pissed me off... For example I wanted them to check the cam chain tensioners because I was hearing some sound from that area and with the problem I had with my 2003..They said without a failure the warranty would not authorize it...So I paid myself for them to check them....And they were fine (36,000 miles)....

Also I took the bike in because it was missing or cutting out once in a while...I had Vance & Hines slipon's...Stock down load and aircleaner... Bike ran fine for 30,000 miles before this problem developed...Dealer would not touch it with the pipes on it...Said I would have to do stage one and tuner.... I put the stock pipes back on....Took it back in two weeks later...And they fixed it???? So, I think can tell you that your warranty has been voided if it pertains to the problem that you are bringing it in for...
I would get the best price and I would go for the 7 year and think about the PPM too!....

My understanding from the sales guy is that it's three years beyond the manufacturers' warranty to give me 5 years of coverage in total. Am I misinformed?

With the new stuff like TBW, etc. and the fact that I'll probably put more than 50,000 on it in 5 years, I've been leaning toward buying it.

This is not the case. The extended warrenty is only from the dateof purchase. I.E. if you buy the 3 year extended warrenty you only have 3 years of ceverage not 5 as some would assume. The original warrenty for 2 years is included in any extended warrenty. I feel it is fraud to call it an "extended" warrenty when it does not "extend" from the end of the origianl warrenty as one would again assume. It is just another way for HD to make money. I had purchased the 3 year extended warrenty on my V-rod when I purchased it in December 2004. I then Purchased my new SG in December of 2007 and I wanted to transfer the extended warrenty from the V-Rod to the Street Glide as it seemed to me that I would still have 2 years of coverage on it. It was explained to me that the extended coverage is fromt he date of purchase not the end of the original warrenty. I asked then whey do they call it extended and not just a longer warrenty. the would not answer. It is crap and I will never purchase it again as I never needed it. Besides any warrently issue should be handeled properly by the dealership anyways. Just my .02.

Purchased my bike Oct 07. With 3 yr extended dealer said it was good until Oct 2012. Thats a full 5 years from the date of purchase.
Thats a fact, if you get a 5 year extended then you have a full 7 years. Maybe I should roll up my pants legs with all the BS being passed in here.

I would call Harely Davidson direct and ask about that length. Dealers are known to say one thing and have HD say another. Hope in your case in works out. As for me I can send you the paperwork from Harely Davidson directly stating that the warrenty expired Dec. 2007 exactly 3 years from date of purchase. Not passing BS just telling it how it is.

I NEVER buy the extended warranty. Rathole the money in a safe place for a rainy day! You'll come out ahead in the long run.

I bought my 2005 heritage in March of 2005. I paid $1,500 for a warranty to take me out to March of 2012. I used this warranty three times. Saved more than the cost of the warranty and when I traded that bike in January of this year, I cancelled the warranty and got a check back for a little over $700.

I had a stage one upgrade on my Heritage and the two dealers that handled my warranty repairs didn't give me any static about different pipes. Sounds like to me some dealers just won't do what's right. That's not a reason to bash a warranty.
