The Buffalo Chip is a BLAST. If your camping , your gonna deal with weather no matter where you stay. We stayed there 2 years in a row. They have a lot of showers-some pay-some free. The pay ones are always clean. It's only a few bucks. There is a real big concert-arena type area with lots of places to eat, a general store, ATM, bars, 2overhead burn-out pits which get used a lot and a real big stage. It's nice to be able to ride all day , do all the other Sturgis stuff, then be able to come back at night and party and not have to leave to find entertainment. Big name bands every night. If you want to have it calm + quite, stay elswhere. If you want to party +have fun it's the place to be.
We definitely didn't pay $1000 to stay there. I think itwas a few hundred per person.
Have a Blast man.
I have been to Sturgis the last 4 years(1 week each year)in a row and only have been rained on twice, one day was about 1/2 a day
and the other time was at night in different years at that,i guess i stayed on the good side of town LOL. Stayed at Glencoe 3 out of 4 years.
I've seen those bands live back in their heyday, and IMHO the Chip is the last place I'd stay at for a motorcycle rally. With places around like the No Name Campground where I can actually sleep and shower and not be gouged, I'd be there instead...but that's just an opinion after all.
not sure where you are riding in from but when we went last time we stayed at the AmericInn in Rapid City but we were passing through and only stuck around for a couple of days (rode 4800 miles in 8 days). I would suggest making your way farther west to the Big Horn Mountains in Wyoming, or seeing Yellowstone. You can even take the most scenic road in America "Bear Tooth Pass" on your way out or on your way back! Be safe and have a good trip!
Do yourself a favor and pony up the cash to rent one of the campers at the Chip... if it's as hot this year as it was last year, you'll appreciate the A/C in the camper... I don't know how those tenters survived
sturgis 07 was hell. Everyday it was at least 100 degrees, way to hot to tent it. There is action all over the black hills area, you could stay anywhere and still have a blast.
I'm lucky I have family all over that area and just stay with them.
TryNemo.
25 miles away between Sturgis and Rapid City.
Elevation is about 5000 feet, so its cool even when its a hundred in Sturgis.
It gets cold at night, so bring appropriate camping gear, or rent a cabin.
We're staying at www.hogheavencampground.com for a few days unless we crash elsewhere as a buddy has an RV and invited me over there, but will have a blast no matter where we end up. If you're drunk enough you can sleep anytime anywhere and the heat or rian won't matter as long as you're prepared. You can preship stuff to HH and they accept gear 5 days in advance. Have fun...I know I will!
