After years of debating if I should do it or not I did. I ordered myslef a 2008 Firefighter edition ultra. Build date is now showing April 14, 2008. I got the ABS and Security Add ons. Now the difficult part where I need some guidance. This is my first harley ever, so let me get that out of the way.
Im looking at the Reinharts, with fuel controller as pipes option. Im uncertain about the Extended Warranty. Dealer of course is pushing hard, spoke with a few local wrenches and seems they all are in agreement Harley will do anything possible to not pay. I like to wrench somewhat myself and am pretty capable of doing most jobs. I'm just not certain which direction to head. So please let me know some of your experiences good and bad on the warranty and if you would purchase another.
Steve,
Welcome to the forum from a retired FD.
The first thing your salesman will give you when you pick up your bike will be the accessories catalog. Better plan on getting a part time job to pay for all the ideas that you'll find there and on this forum.
I wouldn't worry about the bike being reliable, it will be....it seems there are some warranty issues a few are experiencing, but it seems like it is mostly within the first few month. As far as doing the pipes, fuel management, and high flow intake yourself you might want to have a good heart to heart talk with someone in the service department at your dealership, some won't complain, but others will give you grief if a warranty issue comes up. I had Vance and Hines slip-ons, SE A/C, and SERT put on mine at the 1k service, since I was going with the SERT I wanted it dyno tuned anyway and chose to let the dealership do it....they gave me a good deal on the labor anyway, plus by having them do it I know I won't have a warranty issue if something should come up.
If you do the SE slip ons, and SE Air cleaner, and ECM download instead of fuel pak, your extended warrantee will still hold up. If you must go with a fuel pak, don't bother paying extra for the extended.
I went with the download and the extended 7 yr with tire.
I've never purchased the extended warranty (they are usually not through H-D) but I've never had a problem with any warranty work with any of my bikes through my dealer, They even fixed my last bike out of warranty once (called good faith warranty I believe).
