Default Upgrades/Brands vs Warranty Voidance Dilema

After spending a significant amount of time reading many of the performance and exhaust related threads provided by all the members here, I decided on the following:
Rinehart True Dual Exhaust
SE Stage 1 A/C
SERT

I cant thank you guys enough for the valuable opinions, data and information provided over the past few months! If all goes as planned, I will have the bike back by Friday afternoon. Just in time to ride down to the Leesburg Florida Bikefest event about an hour and a half away.

This is where the dilema starts.

Several factors were concidered regarding the above noted upgrades. My main objective was to decrease the heat and improve on the sound and some performance over the stock exhaust, fuel and air systems. Bike was just too lean.
  1. Rineharts. Purely looks and sound. Not too loud yet provide a nice deep rumble at idle coupled with nice rich tone while in the throttle.
  2. SE A/C. Recommended by other riders and appears to be the air cleaner of choice by most riders here that have upgraded.
  3. SERT. This was the most difficult and took a significant amount of research time to select. My selection was based on the fact that I wanted to maintain the integrity of not only the MOCO warranty but also the extended warranty that I purchased. Comments provided by contacting several dealers (could be biased) and the extended warranty provider all made statements regarding the use of HD aftermarket parts not having an impact on the warranty when installed by an HD dealer or an HD certified tech. On the other hand, some out of state H dealers I spoke with were firm in stating that any warranty work with aftermarket parts installed by others (non-HD) would not be covered. One stated clearly that any other fuel management component would not be touched. I was in shock!
I contacted 12 dealers (both in and out of state) regarding this issue. 4 of the 12 dealers stated that they would not cover SE upgrades should the failure be uprade EFI/exhaust/SERT related while the other 8 were just the opposite and were assuring me that these modifications would not affect the warranty yet only if SE or HD provided. This is where I am frustrated at the various responses I received from the same dealers regarding brand new 09 bike modifications.

SCENARIO..

You order a new bike, have the dealer intall exhaust, fuel management upgrades. A/C kits prior to delivery and then state that it MAY affect the MOCO warranty? Either it will or won't! What a toss up! I see that many of you guys are taking delivery of 09's with mods done by dealer. What has been your experience regarding this issue as I am entertaining the thought of getting an 09 RK for solo set up only at an "upgrade friendly dealer".

Back to thread title.

With this in mind, my selection was made to go with the SERT and the SE A/C hoping that if I do have a mechanical failure due to the upgrades, that I can have the repairs made at a dealer that is favorable to HD brand components and not one that will be a strict regarding upgrade warranty work as I have found.
Most of my riding is on longer trips and end up out of state usually within a tow of an HDealer.

In summary, I feel I purchased some great components and peace of mind. If by chance I do have an upgrade related failure, all I can do is hope that it is repaired/covered by the dealer that is responsive to the SE upgrades and not one of the dealers that was determined to deny a claim or work because of any upgrade to the exhaust, air or fuel management system. The odds may be on my side who knows.

I can state that without a doubt, Keith and the guys at Fuel Moto by far had the most knowledgeable staff, best value, price, product support and availability. If my bike was not under the "cloud of warranty questionability", they would have been my go to guys.

Thanks for your comments and information provided. This forum is a wealth of information.
Ride safe

Glad you got something you'll be happy with.

I think I must be missing something in this whole warranty deal. I would think most dealers would go out of their way to cover warranty issues. I say that because I'm assuming they get paid for the service work they do by the factory. i.e. it's revenue for the dealer. So why would they turn that down?

There must be some strict rules and/or checks by the factory when doing warranty authorizations on bikes brought into dealers. Any one have any idea? Is it not the dealers call on whether it's covered? I would guess not based on the behaviors.

Most excellent discourse if I may say so. Heck, should be made a STICKY for noobs who regularly pop up with the question: What is the BEST exhaust, a/c, tuner for my bike (and happen to be worried about my warranty??

Warrenty issues are decided by the MOCO, not the Dealer. SOme dealers will get creative to make sure things are covered, some won't.

My 08 Ultra had the seat coming apart at the seams, they tried to tell me at one dealer that it wasn't covered because I put Harleys sheepskin cover on it. another dealer simply said take the cover off, bring it in, and we'll get it approved.. Its a toss-up and a crap shoot that should NOT happen.

Heck, I even had one idjit tell me that if I put any fuel manegement system on the bike, other than HD's, they would not cover the ecm if it faild, because they had to send it to Harley, and harley runs a test that supposedly tells them what you had connected. I call that one BULL Crap.

I had one over the weekend, where the bolts holding the pully to the wheel came out (dealer never used Loctite) they broke, and I had to have them drilled out and an easy out used to remove them and replace. I was out of town, so I had to takeit to a dealer, they wouldn't even call the warrenty company ( extended warrenty) because it was Sunday, I called on Monday, and was told that it wasn't covered bcause I didn't have tire and wheel coverage. Please...Tell me how those bolts backing out due to the dealers mistake was caused by a road hazard? Thats what wheel and tire covers.

Its amazing to me at what lengths they go to in order to not cover our bikes. Whats more amazing, is that they haven't been stopped by the laws on the books.

S&S reckon that you can change pipes and AC (ie go to "stage 1") without any sort of tuner, the factory computer with oxygen sensors has more than enough range to cover it. It is in the S&S catalouge.

Personally I beleive this as I ran the 96 with no mufflers at all for 1400 miles after the exh broke and the thing ran like a train.

If you want my 2c the whole idea of buying a tuner when all you have done is exh and ac is the best money spinner for the moco i have heard in a long while.

If you change the exh and ac on your car you wouldnt change the computer would you?
