Yep,
common issue. First time I took the derby cover off, I stripped one, so drilled the head off, slid the derby cover off over it and then used vice grips to back it out. I have no clue what the factory is thinking when they put those in. Upon reassembly, they only have to be snug.

Add a cheap impact driver to your tool box when you try to remove it befor you mess it up get the impact out it comes. They were standard tool box item on old metrics the bolts all seize in.

I feel lucky. I just did my 1K service and had no problems with the derby cover. With all the issues discussed here, I was expecting the worst. Already had the easy outs ready. But each bolt came right out, no snapped or bunged up heads. I'm thinking the problems are caused by the dealerships that prep the bikes, not the factory. Unless the factory ships with the primary already lubed.

I had the same problem when I went to change my derby cover to the 100th anniversary one. I didn't break any off, but I did strip one. Here I am, chiseling the screw outta there on a 2 week old bike. Scared the hell out of me, but I did finally manage to get it out without any further damage.[sm=headbang.gif]

Make sure your using a T27 torx , if you have a craftsman set it not in it . Do yourself a favor and get a quality set , I would recommend snap on , or mac.

I have felt your pain too[:@] I think they use some cheap @ss screws. Had to drill three out myself and get a new derby cover. I replaced with stainless after that.

I also stipped one out.

But it was becauseI usedmy Craftsman T25.

It is a T27 and my set didn't have one.

Although very tight, the newly purchased T27 took the rest of them out nicely.

You might as well get the T27.

It's used on the fairing bolts and I believe the hand controls as well.
