Here's the key for me. I rode solo so the tent and sleepin bag gets tied on the sissy bar and it makes a real good backrest, and with something to lean against the arms dont get near as tired even without the windscreen, so the miles go easier and the days roll along easier..
Also find the sweet spot for least viberation and roll alongin that as much as possible.
I really like ridein without the shield but I've rode too many years to think I can roll up the same miles with a screen as without day after day. So when I ride without the windshield I forget any mileage goals, I ride till i'm tired and take a break and ride till tired and break and in the late afternoons I look for a sleepin spot for the night. And whatever miles is rode is what it is!
But when on the Ultra with a good screen I can roll up some huge numbers on mileage If I need to or I can roll up less miles an enjoy the sceenery and listen to the tunes if I want.
So each is good just different

I like riding without a windshield as well, but, on longer rides add a small 16" wind deflector to take some of the wind pressure off the chest, neck and arms/shoulders.

Can ride further, longer, fasterand feel less beaten up by the end of the day so you can party like a Rock Star that night !

If it rains, you will like the small windshield too, something to hide behindand poke your head over it every now and again, wind willclear your classes or helmet of water.

Never had one of those monster barn door type windscreens, kind of defeats the object of being in the wind.

Really like the way my bike looks without the windshield, but I don't ride without it much at all. Guess that's when the wisdom of old age kicks in...when you think "comfort before appearance". Also, the roar of the wind gets pretty dang mind-numbing after a few miles without the shield, and that's a dangerous situation.

I leave the shield off around town. I purchased the windshield bag and carry it in my saddle bag so when we get to where we are going to or where we are stopping for the evening, I pop the shield off, throw it in the bag, stick it in my room or tent, then get my fix with out... I too enjoy the wind as well as the look with out! But the long ride is nicer with the shield...

my .02 cents

I went without one for about 5 years. Travelled throughout about 7 states in the northeast and I never realized what I was missing. Now that I have the windshield on the RK, I rarely ever take it off. Makes a huge difference with less fatigue.

Don't like a huge windshield that i have to look through. However I won't be without my batwing with an 8" clearview attached to it

Lewd_Dude, what is this windshield bag you speak of? Sounds like something I'd be interested in. I don't understand how the windshield could fit in the saddlebag, but as always I could easily be wrong. Thanks!
