I've got a Canon SD 1000. Super-Compact and easy to use.

One thing I found important is to have LCD screen & a viewfinder since many time in the bright sunlight the LCD screen wasn't viewable.

I bought the Sony Cybershot for the last trip the wife and I took to the Philippines to visit her family. This camera is exceptional in pic quality, and the size of the camera itself is about the size of a pack of cigarettes. The 3x Zoom is great also. I will say though it is very costly butI have never been unsatisfied with this purchase.
2nd that... The Sony Cybershot T100 best little camera out there.. 8.1 megapixel adjust down to 2 megs if you want. bigest display on thy
e market, zoom is in the lense, meaning the lense doesn't pop out of the camera. Sliding lensecover and turn camera on at the same time. Uploads into your cpu etc. Girlfriend loves it, fits in my vest pocket. etc. Black, silver, red, (I have the red.)

You won't be sorry..

you need to know WHAT sort of pictures you want to take, before picking a camera. Buying one with all the bells and whistles, won't matter if all you want to do, is whip it out, and take a quick snap shot

Go to
http://www.dpreview.com/
first to figure out WHAT you want, then go to
http://reviews.cnet.com/digital-cameras/?tag=cnetfd.dir
for the leads to the best prices. Just a fair warning. DPReview is brutal in it's reviews, and things like a 0.1 nano second warm up compared to a 2.0 second warm up... wouldn't matter to anyone but a pro... but they don't sugar coat anything. At the Cnet site, there is also reviews by consumers like yourself. And they'll usually have several web sites that will sell at a savings. you might just print off the data sheet and try to have a local merchant match the price you like... or have then throw in some goodies

I bought my wife a Sony DSC- W80. Takes stills and movies lots of great picture from the back of my Ultra.
Liked it so well bought 3 more for my adult kids at XMas. About 219.00 each. Best Buys. I also was trained in photography, but it has been a long time since I used flash powder. Ha HA.

You may want to try one that has Optical Image Stablization (OIS). This removes the shake you get from the road and the bike vibration.. Panasonic and Canon make a bunch of them.

I would highly recommend the Nikon S600 if you plan on taking pictures while riding. Most cameras boast some sort of "Image Stabilization", but they're all passive, and adjust the photo after its taken with software. True image stabilization is active, has more to do with the construction of the camera, works while you're snapping the photo, then runs the image through software. $150 cameras won't have the active feature.
With a 2GB card, a necessity on a 10 megapixel camera, you can find one on the web for under $300 delivered.
Very easy to use (even my challenged wife likes it), a large display, and about the size of a pack of smokes.

Thanks to all for the information and help, and references. Looks like I have just a little research to do. I got some good pointers from you. Now I have a pretty good idea which way to go with this. thanks

Canon Powershot SD870 IS, is perfect and "IS" means "Image Stabilization" which is perfect for not so stable situations...
Ditto. I've got this one and love it.
