I have a 2005 Road King Classic that has only primer on the treads where the gas cap screws in (that is pealing off) and other bikes the same year have a dark grey finish on the treads. The problem is the dealer says they don’t know what to do? They also say that not all 2005 have a finish (BS). The light grey primer is pealing off and is getting in the fuel; I don’t want to have any problems down the road from this? Any suggestions?
Call MoCo directly. That's what I did. The dealer called me the same day and told me they were going to pick my bike up and fix it per MoCo. That was for a different problem.
While you are there ask them for H-D HQ's Phone number. Let them know you will be letting the Motor Company know how well they have been trying to help you with this OBVIOUS defect! I'll bet their tune changes.
Have a well fought 1,

Well I went up to the HD dealer and talked to the service manager about what they where going to do about it He told me he had the factory rep. into look at it and the rep. said that it was from screwing the gas gap on, was not pealing and was not covered under warranty. Well first of all the finish is defiantly pealing off, you can see the bare metal in places! If he truly looked at it he could tell that! The dealer ship has close to 200 bikes in storage there for the winter and I could get the service manager to even look at any of the 2005 Road Kings to compare them, says it’s out of his hands. So I called HD in Milwaukee to let them know what was going on, after he made a call the dealer service manger to see what was going on, he called me back and tells me that there is no finish there that it is made of stainless steel. Harley needs to get some people that know what they are talking about, there is a finsh there (not just bare stainless steel). On the way home I stopped at another dealer, talked to the service manager there. He took me in the back where they had bikes stored for the winter and within about 2 minutes we found a couple of 2005 RK looked in the tanks, both had a finishes where the cap screwed in, with no pealing. Whatz the deal with Harley don't they care if they start getting a bad name. Anyway does anyone have any suggestion to what my next step should be?
Contact your local BBB, name the dealer and the MoCo in the complaint. They will both get inquiries by the BBB and most reputable companies will respond to the BBB. Next step would be your states Atty General office. You'd be amazed at how a letter to the right organization can make things happen.
