Default Engine trouble code

I would like to know if anyy of you are familar with a way to clear a trouble code without going to the dealer. The bike is a 1999 touring with fuel injection. The trouble light comes on about every two minutes stays on for about 10 seconds and goes out. All of the vitals look good on the gauges and it runs great. Any help would be much appreciated,[:@]

Default RE: Engine trouble code

buy the manuals should be your first step!
but basicllywith bike on kick stand or jack engine off.
push in and hold the odometer rest button,
turn ignition on uodometer will light up with I think diag (diagnostic mode)
release button push and hold psst will appear.
push and hold p will flash push and release it will go through tests each time.
it will show a code or not depending if one is currently stored.
push hold wait for clr. repeat procedure for remaining letters sst.
If they are current "soft codes" they will clear.
If hard historic codes. Problem must be fixed. codes cleared with a scanner
or after 50 restarts with no more failures.
This is from memory so not sure if I covered everything accurately.
ut likw I said, you really need to buy the manuals this information is in them.

ECM CODES
The IM (instrument module) is capable of displaying DTC's (diagnostic trouble codes).
Speedometer Self Diagnostics: The speedometer is capable of displaying and clearing speedometer, tachometer, TSM/TSSM and ICM/ECM Diagnostic Trouble Codes (DTC).
1- Turn Ignition switch to OFF & Run/Stop switch is to Run.
2- Push odometer reset button in & hold.
3- Turn ignition switch to Ignition and release odometer reset button. Background lighting should illuminate, speedometer needle should sweep its full range and indicator lamps (battery, security, low fuel, check engine and cruise) should illuminate. The word "diag" should then appear.
4 - Push the odometer reset button once and you will see the selection menu "PSSPt" with the first P flashing.
5 - Each letter represents an area of the diagnostics module. The module that is flashing is the one you are going to check. To move from one letter (module) to the next, you push the odometer reset button one time. (from P to S to SP to t and back to P, etc.)
P = ECM/ICM (Electronic Control Module [EFI] / Ignition Control Module [Carbureted])
S = TSM/TSSM (Turn Signal/ Turn Signal Security Module)
SP = speedometer
T = tachometer
6 - To get the DTC within an area of diagnostics, push and hold the odometer reset button in for 5 seconds and release. If there are any DTC’s the code will be displayed or the word "none" will appear if there are no DTC’s. Push the odometer reset button again to view additional codes if they exist.
7 - Record the codes.
8 - If DTC’s are not to be cleared, Press and release the odometer reset button. Part number of module will be displayed.
NOTE: To determine if a code is current or historic, clear the displayed code by pushing in and holding the odometer reset button ( longer than 5 seconds) until 'clear' comes up. Release the odometer reset button. Turn OFF the ignition switch. Run your bike and shut it down then recheck the DTC’s again by repeating steps 1 to 9. If the code is current it will reappear.
9 – Press and release the odometer reset button to continue to the next module.
10 – Turn Ignition switch to OFF.

Default RE: Engine trouble code

I have the manual. Read about reading codes on the radio screen by turning bike to run position until after fuel pump shuts off etc etc then count the codes. Problem I am having is the bike has got the old style odometer reset IE you rotate the dial to reset odometer so as you explained it does not work in this application.

Default RE: Engine trouble code

I just went through all of this on my '02 UC. I searched high and low and couldn't figure out how to clear an ECM code. I found one post that said only the dealer could reset it on older bikes. I found another post that said you can do it manually but didn't list a procedure. I was getting a checking engine light while riding it. I was able tofigure out that the code was for the intake air temperature sensor low voltage condition. I removed the IAT sensor and cleaned some oil off it. The bike runs fine so I'm just going to wait and see ifthe codeclears itself. If not, I will probably get it to the dealer some time and have themclear it. Who knows, I may have to replace the sensor. I haven't ridden it any real distance in the last few days.

Default RE: Engine trouble code

buy the electronics diagnosis manual it explains it better.
Do you have fuel injected (original poster)? But have the old style odometer?
My oldest manual is 01 and shows electronic speedometer and odometer.
The radio is also capable of displaying DTC's but the newer ones are for radio DTC's only.
Tomorrow I will see if my 01 manual mentions the older odometer setup.

Default RE: Engine trouble code

Got this from IM at a post he made.
It may apply to your bike.
My 01 manual doesn't cover your setup. Hope this helps you.

does this work for you?:1-turn ignition key switch to ignition and then turn off 1 second after fuel pump stops.
2.repeat #1 again..remember 1 second after pump stops
3.turn ignition key switch to ignition and wait about 8 seconds for a bunch of flashing of the check engine light
it will then stop for 2 seconds..get ready... these are the codes you must count:
it will slowly flash 1,2,3,5....there is NO 4....this is the first digit of the 2 digit code ..so it can only be 1,2,3,5 __ __
then a 2 second pause...then you will get second digit of the 2 digit code..it can only be 1,2,3,4,5,6
remember after the complete 2 digit code is given you will go back to the rapid flash sequence..
there are a total of 15 codes available with this procedure
examples
52,53,54,55 bad news ECM replacement
56 crank/cam sensor
11 throttle sensor
12 barometric 14 engine temp. sensor 15 intake temp sensor
23 and 32 are injectors front/rear
24 coil
33 fuel pump relay--in this case you would not hear the pump but instead waited 3 seconds after the on / off sequence

Default RE: Engine trouble code

ChooChoo In reply to your inquirie about a particular method of testing. That is the procedure I follwed. Multipleflashes was the result. The manual says that means there are old codes stored and they would clear themself after fifty start stop cycles
