Default Computer guru needed for SERT help

I need someone that can help me set the com ports on my laptop and have the SERT program recognize them. I am somewhat proficient on computers, but this bios stuff is beyond me. and I am about ready to throw this laptop into the woods. I had zero problems when I was using the PC and had serial ports(Old PC DIED), But I cannot make this this work to save my life with the adapter and USB.
The message I am getting is: unable to to determine interface type
Verify interface is connected, ignition on and correct com port is selected. and I have all that and the run switch is in the run position. The only option I can get is com port 3 in the SERT menu. HELP please

Two problems could exist

1) you got Windows Vista
2) your USB cables suck

There is about only one brand of cable that anybody has had luck with

This is what I had to use to communicate with my sert. (Although I do have Vista)

This is the "usb 2 serial" adapter that's been found to work for the SERT:
http://www.usbgear.com/computer_cable_details.cfm?sku=USBG-232MINI&cats=199&catid=199%2C461%2C106%2C1 009%2C601

The important feature is the "FTDI Chip" chipset.

But, you should try this first also.
-open SERT software
-load map
-try to "GET ECM INFO" (this is when you would get error in reading ports)
-click on Com Port (from the top menu)
-(most computers now have many USB ports) so how do you tell which one to use? When I got my error, the error told me which port to select. (Maybe a Vista thing)I think because I had the SERT already hooked up or that was the only USB port in use at the time. So try that. If not, go down the line and select each one till you hit it.

I'm pretty sure I max'd out the port speed for the usb serial port. I used a Belkin and had no problem. You can check the com port on XP by going to the Control Panel, select System --> Hardware --> Device Manager --> Ports (Com & LPT). You should see the port there and can check its properties (including speed) by right or double clicking it.

I did all that, thanks, I just need the speed of the SERT so I can set the port at the same speed, I am thinking I am going to have to get the belkin adadpter for it to ever work. I have a DYNEX now and it is sure is giving me a headache
