Default HD Sales

Ouch, that '08 Screaming Eagle Ultra that I was going to buy 4-5 weeks ago is still on the dealer's floor. A TON of anniversary bikes as well (at least one of each model). A sales person was going on and on with somebody about how much better the resale value of the HD is compared to a GoldWing. I laughed as said "not anymore jack." He wasn't happy...

Resale value my ****. Maybe if you bought the bike 20 years ago. A 1983 FL cost 6500 new then is worth 7200 now. I don't see that same bike which costs about 20,000 being sold for that price or close 20 years from now, do you?

My local dealer not only does not have the prices on the floor models but the have a 2008 Ultra with a factory Ultra side car (w/ mechanical reverse, shifter sticking out of the gear box) but they do have the price listed on that one only and its 39,000. That has been sitting there for awhile too and I imagine it will be sitting there a long while longer.lol

Funny about the Anniversary models not selling this year. It made me think of all the hype for the 100 yr version.

I can remember the line "book now (2001) so you will be able to get the 2003 , 100 yr anniversary bike of your choice as they will
SURELY sell out". I was able to buy what I wanted in 2003 and could have ordered one from the factory in June 2003. I recall
seeing several 2003's in 2004 still rusted to the spot on the showroom floor!

With the way things are going from HD, I wonder just what the percentage of off shore parts are included.

ftlee20723 : I would guess you're off that salesmans Christmas card list. I wonder what bike now has the best resale, HD or metric?

Later......

I just don't really call 105 years an anniversary of any kind

105 year anniversary is insignificant. It is all marketing hype. I do like the colors though.

Might as well put a special anniversay model every year, like when my wife and I celebrate our annual anniversay. [8D]

To be truthful, when I was looking into this last summer, the GoldWing and the Ultra (comparable) has about the same loss in value as soon as you drove it off of the lot.

Wish the '90s were back. Had to wait on my '96 Softail Custom for 1 year. Bought a 1200 Sportster (someones financing fell through) to ride around while I wanted on the Softail because I knew I could sell the Sportster for more used than new. And that is exactly how it turned out.

Remember Harley's Ride Free program. Buy a HD Sportster. When you are ready to trade-up to a bigger bike, they would give you what you paid for the Sportster.

Ultraman'08,

Most own Harleys for non resale investment reason, me too. However the original poster had mentioned the salesman tried to shine him on about resale bull. I believe the MOCO has squeezed everybit of that out and it doesn't exist like it use to. And I thought they were building bikes by the MANS system(manufactore as needed system). There seems to be a glut like maybe they were thinking the gas prices was gonna cause a surge in bike purchasing? I follow several bike sale sites and the prices appear to be dropping noticeably(or else I am seeing things?)

Metrics loose their value setting on the showroom floor. LastMay when I bought myElectraglide I could have bought a brand new 2005 Honda VTX1800 for $9000. A 2007 was 13000. This ruins the resale value of any metric. The same was true for Yamaha. I ended up buying the HD because it came ready to ride. All I added to go on a 2000 mile trip was footpegs and a rider back rest. In 2005 when I bought a VTX1300 I spent 6 months getting it ready for a trip. Everything I have done to since to the EGC has been just because.

Dunno 'bout the rest of the country, but our dealership is OUT of '08's - period. They come in, an' are sold 'bout as fast as they come outta the box.
