I am about to replace my rear on my 07 Road Glide after6000 Miles... Probably about 1000 left on it. A friend told me that the D404 is the exact same tire but without the HD name on it. After reading the literature, it seems like the 402 has a different belting and different sidewall construction. The 404 simply says "bias ply". Has anyone had any experience with these two tires? I am leaning toward the HD D402 (MU85B16)
I just glanced at the page, but the 404 appears to be marketed as a "cruiser" tire, which usually means it doesn't have the same load capacity as a "touring" tire like a 402.
I just put an Elite 3 on the rear of my Road Glide. Got 6k out of the original. I've got 2K on the E3 and it looks like it's holding up better than the 402. Only time & miles will tell, but then again, I usually don't get more than 6K no matter what tire it is. People that say they get10-15K out of a rear are working miracles as far I'm concerned.Never got more than 7500 ever! And that was on lightweight Sporty.
I e-mailed Dunlop a couple years back and asked them this question. I had purchased a 404 on eBay for my Fatboy. They said that they are NOT the same tire. That said, my buddy has about 10K on that 404 (I sold it to him for his Heritage when I traded bikes) and all is well.
Do not put Dunlop D404's on a Touring Bike. I emailed Dunlop directly and they told me handling characteristics and load capacity are different from the D402's. A local shop, TT Leather's on Clinton Highway in Powell (Knoxville), Tennesee told me the 404's were okay and Dunlop told me different. Beware of unscrupulous shops out there!
The load range is different. I've ran the 404 on the Heritage but i won't use them on the Ultra. I too am going to try the Elite 3 this time on the Ultra.

The 404 is the jap made dunlop. It is OEM on many metrics. I have one on my old Super glide. They are ok for lighter bikes, sportsters, dynas, metrics, but not ok for touring. The bikes exceed the load capicity of the tire. They look the same, but they are made different. The 402 (HD logo on the sidewall) is a much heavyer and better tire.
Creepshow, I will be going with the elite 3's also.
It's a better tire for BIG baggers. IMHO.
Run the 402's on 3 harleys, time to kick it up a notch.
Beside's, I'm tired of cleanin' white walls.[:@]
just put the elite 3 on the rear after getting 11,000 on the 402 giving it a try so far i like the way it handly's waiting for the front tire and the weight is more than the 402 get the mu90 cause the mt90 is 100 pounds differance in weight
