I just ordered this linkagefrom Chicago HD. Is it necessary to periodically lubricate the heim joints?
Lube is not a necessity unless you ride in particularly dust/sandy conditions. They will wear a little and if you want to keep them in top shape, remove them and work a little grease into the ball/socket when you are waiting for your oil to drain on an oil change. Rotating in all directions will work the grease into the socket. They will not wear out but can loosen up a little over the years from wear if not lubed.
Went home for lunch, and dropped the Harley Dealer and picked a new one up. Got home and discovered that you guys were right the stock one had broken. I installed the new one, but I wanted to ask, I had to extend the new one out longer than the original, bec the acorn nut on the front was getting into the front jug a touch. Everything seems to shift smooth now, but want to make sure that adjustment would be ok??!!!
I bought the 2 heim joints for 8.75 ea, cut a SS 5/16" rod for 2.00 and threaded both ends myself. With nuts the whole thing cost less than $20. Aint got fancy designs but works great! Put it on a 5 spd'80 FLT I used to own.
Are both the hiem joints the same thread?? ( both RH or both LH or one of each?)

Check and make sure you have the nut on correctly, it may go on the front and not the backside. I have one of those shiters on mine but it's at home so I can't tell you for sure. I'm thinking the acorn should be on the outside.
