There are a few different kits - H-D and Baker both build them.
From the little bit of research that I have done - the 6-speed gearset is shipped complete and no bearing work has to be done. So it's pretty much just slide the new gearset in & go.
That is a bit of an oversimpilfication - as you have to remove the primary also...but it is really not all that difficult a task given you have some tools (you will need a task-specific socket to pull the clutch-hub) - and I would not advise attempting it unless you have a compressor & impact driver. BUT - given you can get those tools and have a free day - it's pretty straightforward.
It is an expensive upgrade tho - I think your looking at $1500 on the low end - and upto $2000 for the gearset.
Not much help to your question but the gearing that I have seen involving your stock housing seems to be for an overdrive system. You may want to stay with a direct drive like the Baker setup. In any case, good luck.
1- check bank account balance.
2- type Baker DriveTrain into google and follow links.
3- check bank account one last time.
Then decide if this is right for you.
Ok, all kidding aside the 6 spd has been on the burner for along time, just cant seem to get the money together to do this myself, so will ahve to pay someone to do it.
In the mean time, I keep shopping the Swap boards looking for one in the event that one will fall into my hands(cheap)
I have heard from others that have had great success in the fianl install and the rpms' have reduced by 200 or so at 80 mph.
Will it be right for me, cant say till I ride a 6spd myself.
Till then, swap section here I come. http://www.bakerdrivetrain.com/v4/go...mp;d=stateList

two real good choices....both just slide in(hd requires some clearance'n)....HD SE6 is a true overdrive with 1-5 being the same....Baker offers 2, one is like the SE6 being a true overdrive with straightcut gears and the other(better choice) is the DD6....i run a DD6....its 1-5 ratio's are different with 6th being a 1.1 direct drive....it accomplish's overdrive by changing the front pulley(on engine, in primary) with a 28 tooth.....the DD6 is a masterpiece, very smooth and silky.....either the SE or DD6 are great tranny's....the SE is far better than the stock 6sp's in 07's and later bikes.....Ultima also makes a good drop in 6sp gear set for less....with my DD6 & 28 tooth i cruise at 70 @ 2600rpm.....80 @ 3k...i love the ratio's and the tranny
good, so they do make a "kit", with the price of gas it's worth it...my cousin is a bike mechanic and can get wholesale plus help me install, i think i'll get one soon...thanks
I put a RevTec 6 speed in my Duece and 26,000 miles later I have not had a single problem. Very quiet trans. $1000.00 a couple years ago.
Don't know if they make a gear set for FLs but you might check it out.
You can pop a revtech Softail gear set in a Bagger case. I have done it myself with no issues. This is not a plug for revtech as I hate the company custom chrome. Just saying what I have done myself.
I don't think you will get improved gas mileage, if that is what you are looking for. I have the HD Se 6 speedcomplete transand I get the same mileage as my buddies do with their 5 speeds. 6th is really useless below 70mph.
What you do get is the sensation of doing 70mph at 80mph. For me, it just seemsmore relaxedat 80mph +with the 6 speed.
