Just changed my fluids (1000 miles) on my 08 Ultra. After readinga number of different post on this site, I went with Mobil1 Synthetic 20W50 in crank case, Mobil 1Synthetic 20W50 in primary and Mobil 1 Syntheic 75W90 in transmission. The main reason for the Mobil 1, other than being an outstanding product, was the availability.I replaced the oil filter with HD brand. Everything went well except forremovingthe oil filterwithout draining oil all over the front of the bike.Used the ole tin-foil funnel, it worked well but still gotsome oil on the front of the engine, pain in thea$$ to clear up. After everything was said and done, the bike seems to run a little smoother, it shifts smoother and I have noticed less noise in 5th gear.
I would highly recommend anyone getting ready to chagethe fluids in their bike, go with the Mobil1.
Thanks for all the help in deciding which fluids to go with.
After years of using Syn 3 I changed to the Mobil 1 in my new Ultra at the 1K service and really like the results also. As for the oil filter leak I have a plastic trough that I bought and it tooo works pretty well but you still get a litlle bit here and there. I read on here where someone recommended using a zip lock bag over the oil filter to catch everything and I'm going to give that a try when I change the fluids again. Might just work !!!
I was talking to a friend of mine how owns a 07 Ultra. He said heread on the forum about someone using a piece of plastic/vinyl rain gutter. They placed the rain gutter under the oil fliter, removed itand let the excess oil run down the gutter into an oil pan.
Eddie,
The Mobil 1 bottle on the 20-50w says it's good for the tranny too. Why did you use 75w90?
Not to answer for him, but why wouldn't you use gear lube in a gear box?
In my opnion, the Mobil 1 vtwin or Syn 3 arecompromise oils. By designing them to work in all three holes, they loose some of the additives that are good for one but bad for the other. I'm a big fan of motor oil for the motor and gear lube for the gear box. I like to use an oil that was designed for a specific application, not generic so it will work anywhere.
After breaking the filter loose slip a 1 quart ziplock bag on it to where you cover the filter mount. Then just turn the filter and bag until it falls in the bag. Zip it close and yer done!!!
