Which tapered V&H slip ons do you have exactly?
Are they like the classic straight cut slipons with tapered end caps? http://www.vanceandhines.com/a203_classic_drs.html
If so , you can go louder or quieter depending on the baffle packing or removal of the baffles altogether.

I ran khromewerks hp100's on my road king. They have a deep rumble at idle, they sound assertive and a bit loud when accelerating aggressively, and then they sound mellow and strong at cruising speed. You will love the sound of these slip ons. They are one of the few slipons that will increase power and torque. I believe they out perform most other slip ons, with thunderheaders a close second. Now, the best sounding slip ons I've heard
were from Rick Fass racing products. They deliver the most perfect note you will ever hear. They are very expensive, they have a unique tip design that some may not like, and they do absolutely nothing for power. The hp100s have three different pipe tips you can order. Now, if you want loud, I'd agree with the earlier post, go forthunderheader slipons with true dual exhausts (equal length header pipes... not all true duals are really true). True duals reduce your torque more than stock header pipes, but add a few horses, which for a bike your size adds nothing. Torque is where it's at. Two into 1's give you way more torque. The best? Fatcats and Thunderheaders. Good luck. Here's a pic of the Hp100s
