Stereo Problem (crackling sound)
I need some help. I have an 03 Ultra with Hogstunes speakers. When I'm riding there's a crackling sound coming from the speakers. When the bike is not running or moving the sound is not present. I've taken the outer fairing off and checked for broken wires, loose wires, trying to replicate the problem when the bikes not running. I suspect my stereo is going bad but I'd hate to replace it only to have the same probelm. BTW, checking it out with a meter myself is not an option.

If it was the radio it wouldn't matter whether the bike is running. You probably have some corrosion in a connection somewhere. Make sure all your fasteners are clean and tight (might need some sandpaper or emery cloth), not just wiring.

if its not a loose connection then its probably transient peaks in the music causing distortion. one or both of your speakers might have a slight rub on the voice coil or could be bottoming out against the backplate. an easy way to figure this noise out is use some bass intensive music or a modern rock record that was recorded heavily compressed. If you have kids and they have any of those disney made music cds try one of them, they are horribly compressed music and will show the weakness of speakers. If what i just typed went completely over your head, I apologize. Basically turn it up loud and see if the sound you heard comes back while parked.

If you remove the fairing cap (takes 2 minutes) and turn the sound up. Thenbump the speaker frame with the palm of your hand. It it pops or cracks it's internal in the cone or may be the internal leads from the voice coil to the wire terminals. If so, call or email Pez at Hogtunes to see if it's under warranty. If you can't get it to crakle or pop when you bump it and it's under load without a clear problem, it's likely not an issue with the speaker itself.
