Default tire balance issues

sorry for the double post. Just thought my issue might get more response.

Just had 2 new Dunlop Elite 3s mounted and balanced at my local indy shop. He called me with a an issue. As I had not purchased the tires from him. Just doing the mount and balance.

He said no issues with the front tire. small amount of wieght to a spoke for a "zero" balance

Rear wheel he said he was concerned about because he needed to add almost 4oz of weight, both spoke as well as stick on weights to get the tire to balance out to "zero"

He told me he believe there is a defect in the tire that we cant see, but he told me that he never has had to add more then an ounce or so to balance a tire.

Is his concern ligit? Could I have a defective tire? I did see that the Balance fot was lined up with the valve stem. Could running this much weight cause a safety issue?

respects

Frank

They are correct it could be a defective tire. But it could also be the balance patch on the tire may have come loose. Manufacturers put these on the inside of the tire for balance either way the tire would be no good. You'll have to take the tire off to inspect the inside of the tire to see if that is the case. Good luck.

If he's really concerned have him pull the tire off the wheel, balance the wheel without the tire & find the real heavy spot on the wheel. Most often the valve stem isn't the heavy spot. I do it with every wheel I change a tire on, & it usually reduces the amount of weight needed. I also mark the inside of the wheel so I won't have to do it again the next time. Shops are terrible about doing that quality of work. I punctured a tire on a trip & was forced to allow a shop to change the tire. Even though I told 'em about the mark in the wheel they mounted the tire to the valve stem with a bunch of weights to correct the balance. Still worked........<shrug>

They are not concerned that it wont work. There concern is that since I didnt purchase the tire from them, that I may have gotten a bad tire. (I purchased from Ronaverys.com) I am going to contact them on Monday to see if they will ship another tire. This way I will know. The indy shop said they will remount the other tire for free.

There is nothing obviously wrong with the tire, but never know I guess.

Not concerned enough to check the wheel balance? I've purchased several tires from Ron Ayers & never gotten a bad one. It could happen, but no more often than from any dealer. If Ron Ayers does send you a new tire it'll be a good test. Watch 'em mount the new one & see how much weight they need. If they don't balance the wheel first, I'll bet it won't be much different than the one on there now.

Does anyone know what the balance specs are for the 9 spoke stock wheels?

I checked my service manual and could not find any specs.

I checked the specs on my Buell Ulysses. The maximum weigth permissiable is 1 oz on the front and 2 oz on the rear. The wheels are to be balanced to within a 0.25 oz. Balance weights are to be attached to the right side of the front wheel. It does not matter on the rear wheel.

My 08 EG has balance weigths on the front wheel (left side I think) and none on the rear wheel.

Well new tire on the way. No questions asked. They said to speed up the process, they will bill me for the second tire and send a Return Authorization for the other as soon as I get the new one.

Lets see what the shop does now. I will keep ya posted.
